Re: More bees in three weeks

It appears that's what's happening. With the observaton window I can check them daily and it's strange that both hives were about the same until Monday and then a bunch of them decided to move over...

    More bees in three weeks

I installed two packages of bees three weeks ago Monday and released the queens on Thursday (neither one had made it out). So it wwould have been at least Thursday before they could start laying. ...

    Re: city water and syrup

I've noticed that the bees will stop taking water from the bird bath for a day or so after I refill it. It seems that they prefer it after it sits for a while.
  4. Re: 10 year old honey with slight fermented smell

Would there be any concerns about the honey being stored in a metal drum vs a wooden one? Just wondering if the metal would leach into the honey over the years.

Re: 30 hrs after package install.

I've been trying for two years to get some decent pictures through the glass and haven't been successful yet. If it's sunny glare is a problem. If it's cloudy the flash messes it up. The best...

Re: Installed my 1st. package of bees today.

It looks like a hive from BeeThinking but their entrances are on the side and not the ends.

Re: Bee Intallation, can it be this easy?

I didn't watch the videos. Was there any mention of pulling the plug out of the queen cage so they could get her out?

Re: Installed my 1st. package of bees today.

It is fun, isn't it? I used the full suit the first time I installed a package and also didn't need it. Now I just wear a veil except as Chemguy there said, during a dearth they get sorta touchy. ...

    Re: Question from new beek

I installed two packages and started giving them sugar syrup right away. The first week they were all over it. By the second week they stopped taking it. I guess after getting settled in they...

    Re: Top bar virgin

Top bars are great for the backyard hobbyist. You won't get as much honey from them as a Langstroth and they require more hands-on attention but they're a lot of fun. I live in the city and have two...

Re: How much suger syrup ?

I put two packages of bees in last week and put out feeders with syrup in the yard. The first couple of days the bees made a run on the feeders and after that they just ignored them. I guess they...

    Re: Drone Size

I got two packages out of Georgia and it had some huge drones in it. My first thought when I saw them was that they weren't honeybees.
  14. Top Bar Hives -- The red headed step child of beekeeping

So, after a year of using my top bar hive (personal choice after much research last year), I took a beekeeping workshop offered by the local county beekeeping association to get my certification. ...
  15. Re: Top Bar Package Install in 46" Long Hive Without Follower Board

I'd recommend a follower board and limit them to half the hive for a week or two until they get settled in and started building comb. They don't need all that extra space right away. Keep an eye on...

Re: Keeping Hives Under Solar Panels

My concern would be that the reflection from the solar panels will interrupt the bees foraging and finding their way back home again. They use the sun as a guidance system.

  18. Re: Killing an Africanized hive but preserving the honey

I'm not an expert by any means but if you put Africanized brood in a tame hive isn't it possible that they could requeen using the African brood you put in? Then if that queen mated with African...
  19. Re: Should I wait to put new bees in the hive?

Got the bees yesterday. It was 50 degrees and sunny so I put them in their hives. They took to them right away. Put some feeders in with them and some insulation over the hives. Next few days are...

  21. Should I wait to put new bees in the hive?

Here's my dilemma. I'm got two packages of bees coming up from Georgia on Monday. The high for Monday is in the upper 40's. Overnight it's going to be upper 20's and Tuesday in the 30's with...

    Re: Observation window and condensation

I have TBHs with plexiglass viewing windows and the glass gets a little dingy from the bees walking all over it but I've never had a problem with condensation. Also, because of the reflection it's...

That's a good point. If I wanted to go into the hive from the entrance end having a follower board there would make it easier. I also like the idea of just putting a spacer there that will give the...

When I started with my TBH last year it was suggested to put a divider board in next to the end wall of the hive (the entrance is on the side) before the first bar of comb that would be drawn. ...
