Re: Are we being greedy and foolish

Being told "not to expect honey" doesn't mean "you won't get any". Every year is different, every colony different.

If you've got a strong colony and strong nectar flow, I'd definitely add those...
  2. Re: What to do with extra pollen frames?

In my experience, even the bees tend to ignore old pollen frames. I've had some luck soaking them overnight in a big tub of water, rapping them sharply on my back deck to shake out some of the...

    Re: Pest control

If it's effective killing insects in your yard, it will be effective killing bees.

    Re: Sugar Water

Feed until they have drawn out the comb on the 2nd brood box. With all the rain we've had the past couple weeks, there hasn't been much opportunity to forage.

Re: Double nuc, what am I missing?

While I haven't tried Mr. Palmer's techniques (yet), I wanted to let you know that he will be the featured speaker this fall at the State Beekeeper's meeting: http://www.hoosierbuzz.com/

Re: Mold on Inner Cover/Imrie Shims

I would think adding a shim would result in a lot of burr comb. I just find a stick, about pencil width, and prop the telescoping cover up a bit to provide additional ventilation.

Re: Move syrup to undersupered super?

Possibly. Bees move their stores around so that it's convenient for them, not us.

    Re: Is this normal?

It's normal for brood frames to become darkened, but usually it takes a few years to become "completely black". I would expect in a new hive, after only a few brood cycles, you'd have dark brown, but...

    Re: Looks like bearding.... But

It's a poorly-understood behavior called 'washboarding'. (Not an indication of swarming)
Do a search on it and you can find numerous threads discussing it in detail.

    Re: Help with box configuration

As I understand it, you've got another deep of drawn comb sitting there? I'd put the queen in the bottom deep, add the 2nd deep, and then put the medium with the brood on very top. That gives your...

Re: What to do with two queens?

It's not terribly unusual for there to be two queens. Usually happens when there is a supercedure, and the bees let the old queen live until they are happy with the replacement.

    If that's the...

Re: NUC Install - insult to injury

If you have bees, you're going to have SHB, varroa, etc. It comes with the territory.

Re: Preparing Drawn Comb for Supers

Depends on how many raccoons/opossums & other critters you have around you. I live in the woods, but having dogs, the critters don't usually come too near the house. When I've left out frames, it...
  15. Re: Bees gathering at entrance and low productivity...

Not enough information. On your inspections, did you see brood (open & capped)? Was there anything in the queen cell you saw - anything in it? Could be it was just a queen cup.

Re: Queen present, but no brood

I'd make sure there is plenty of room in the broodnest (not honeybound) and give them a frame of eggs & open-brood from another hive.

Re: Preparing Drawn Comb for Supers

Personally, I wouldn't be concerned about 'new honey', I'd just put the partially-filled super on top.

Now, if I wanted the frames emptied - I once had some slimed by waxmoth - then I'd just set...

    Re: Help required: dead queen

    Yes.

Just a guess, but the bees may have decided to replace her. Often in a supercedure, they wait until they have a replacement before removing the old queen. I'd inspect, looking for eggs...

    Re: Swarm or supercedure?

Second the swarm cells. Location of the cells may be an indication of swarm vs. supercedure, but the number of cells says 'swarm'.
  20. Re: Help with this situation (new beekeeper question)

During summer months I prop the top lids up just a bit to increase ventilation. Find a stick about the width of a pencil and put it along the front edge of the inner cover.

Re: Question about a problem hive...

    Been there, done that.
Some colonies just defy the usual remedies and insist on dwindling away.
At some point you need to cut your losses.
If you're going to buy queens, I'd use them making...
  23. Re: New bee keeper questions on queen cells video link inside

I'd be hesitant to split a hive that you just installed as a nuc 3 weeks ago. jbraun is correct in that once they have the swarm impulse, it's difficult to change their minds, but in this case, if it...

    Re: First split questions

In making the split I would have attempted to divy up the frames of brood more evenly, but as long as there are eggs & plenty of nurse bees in both, you should be okay.

    As Barhopper noted, you may...

    Re: nuc combine

Too late to re-queen? On June 8th? I don't know your climate, but can't believe it's that much different than mine in southern Indiana. I've started nucs well into July and had them build enough to...
