Re: Attacked For No Apparent Reason

It's always a risk to be in the area of orientation flights or swarms. It's not that they are mean, but a bee tangled in hair or otherwise annoyed is more likely to sting. It's a simple fact that...

    Re: Building nucs

There are queens for sale in the "For Sale" forum right here.
  3. Re: Is now and OK time to requeen in the northeast?

Maybe Andrew can give you a cutoff date for doing this in your area as he's in Maine as well.
  4. Re: Is now and OK time to requeen in the northeast?

I agree with Ray. I never pinch a queen unless I have a mated replacement or the hive is so mean I don't care if I lose it. Too many things can go wrong otherwise.

    Re: Jester's EZ NUC

It's a great product. Just made a couple of splits in them today. I use a frame feeder and three frames. It's a temporary home until I move them into another box.

    Re: Maxant Extractor for sale

I have this exact extractor and would buy it again in a second. If you need an extractor, and live close, buy this. I'll be getting the 1400 soon too, so mine will be for sale soon too.

Re: What kind of bush is this?

Looks like wild grape to me. A viney weed around here.

    Re: Ultra Breeze hood alternative?

You are not correct. The hood is absolutely removable. I removed the hoods on both my jacket and suit two days ago and washed them.
  10. Re: Where is the Best Place to buy frames and foundation

I'm a small time guy compared to Jim. I'm also a woodworker, and I can tell you that the Mann Lake frames are works of art. I've never gotten a bad frame from them and I've bought hundreds.

    Re: Pesticide kill

That's tough to watch. I'd be tempted to have an herbicide spray event, and I don't mean Round-up. There's not a plant I can't kill if I have my mind made up.
  12. Re: Where is the Best Place to buy frames and foundation

    Mann Lake
  13. Re: How do you store extracted comb till next season?

I used to freeze it all and then keep it in the basement. This year it will be BT and then in the basement. It's all back on the hives getting cleaned up, but the ones I remove soon will get BT...

Re: Can't find mites in my hive

Keep in mind I only like the sticky board for trends. Don't base treating on it. I use sugar shakes and alcohol washes to make decisions.

Re: Can't find mites in my hive

Check in a couple of weeks. I like to check at the end of July. If there are bees, there are mites but if you're doing the shake correctly you should find at least one if you have an issue. If you're...

    Re: Frames from EFB hive

Check out http://www.montcobeekeepers.org/Pages/Irradiation.aspx. This is my club's page about irradiation. It has all of the details.

    Re: Frames from EFB hive

If it happens to me I won't use the frames until they get irradiated in my club's annual irradiation program. This even takes care of AFB.

Re: These are yellow jackets right? Pictures.

Yep, yellow jackets. Honey bees don't make nests in the ground.

Re: How long do most neew beekeepers keep at it?

Yes, Glock still is an active beekeeper. He posts quite a bit on Facebook on a queen breeders forum.

    Re: AFB?

it appears sturdier to me. I doubt i'll need to buy another one unless I want to do more than a hive at time. I'm sure SNL can tell you the specific differences.

Re: Is it too late to start this year?

I agree with Trottet1. I'm the pres of my local club and I respond to people all of the time between meetings. If you were up here if I couldn't find you a nuc I'm sure we could make a pair of splits...
  25. Re: Noticed a gap in between top feeder and broodbox.

You could use duct tape or weatherstripping to seal it up.
