  1. Re: capped queen cells, how to make the most of them??

I did my first split (1st nuc) about a month ago. I only took 2 frames of brood, shook a frame of extra bees, added a frame of honey & pollen (leftover from the year before so i don't know how good...

    Re: Bring out your dead

I have seen them fly them off, but they seem to crash land about 5-10 ft from the hive.

    Re: Are Russians all that?

I got a Russian hybrid from Kelley a couple of weeks ago. I am curious how they will do compared to the standard Italian bees I have. It hasn't been long enough for the Russian bees to emerge yet,...

Re: I hate ALL my feeders

My first attempt was with baggies. They didn't take that fast enough and they made a mess if I had to get into the hive and they were still full. Since they need space by adding a spacer on top, I...
  5. Re: Expectations of five frame nucleus hive purchase?

I got a sorry nuc last year for top dollar. This was actually a replacement after the first one had only 2 frames of bees, 2 empty frames, and a missing frame. The second one only had 2 1/2 frames...

    Re: Hive Top Feeder Trouble

I've always felt the Mann lake top feeder had some serious violations of bee space.

    Re: Fall honey light colored?

Thanks all, for confirming that Goldenrod is actually light. I was worried that maybe something was wrong with the honey. The honey was good, but didn't stand out to me like this year's spring...

    Fall honey light colored?

Been busy and just now taking honey off my hive. Unlike last year though, this year's Fall honey is light - just as light as the Spring honey (if not possibly lighter). My frames weren't 100%...

    Re: Honey not capped yet

They could have eaten it, then refilled it. That's what mine seems to have done when we had all that rain.

Re: Wintering nucs in a garage or shed

I'm no expert, but it would seem that if the temperature is too high (as in unnatural & higher than the typical winter), their metabolism would be different and they may need more food as well as...

    Re: Washing Plastic Honey Filters

I don't know how well the plastic ones hold up to boiling water, but that's how I cleaned my stainless ones the first time. I threw them in a pot of boiling water and the wax melted & floated to the...
  15. Re: Looking for a small bucket with a honey gate valve?

On my first trial extraction (just 2 frames), I just used a 5 quart kitchen pot. I poured manually from that to the jars. A little tricky, but doable. You'll never need a container that small...
  16. Re: Looking for a small bucket with a honey gate valve?

There are 2 gallon buckets made of the same quality & thickness as the 5 gallon buckets (simply looks like a mini version). I have never seen them for sale new, but our relish, sauerkraut & sport...

    Re: Frames After Extracting

Its simple. Put the wet supers (just as they are) ABOVE the inner cover (and underneath the top cover). Bees will clean them out and take it all in to the hive, UNDER the inner cover. Works like a...

Re: opinions on 2 full entrances?

I've got 2 entrances, and they seem to ignore the top one (except to guard it). I didn't think bearding hurt anything, but if it bothers you, mine stopped bearding when I installed a slatted rack.

    Re: Yellowjacket success!

Barely hurt? Yellow jackets are among the worse. Those look more like hornets to me (but I thought their stings were pretty bad too).

Re: Making a foundation under a hive?

I used some pavers to built a 2'X3' pad for the hive stand to sit on (with landscaping barrier underneath). Since then, I've added mulch around the paver pad so I don't have to stand in mud when its...

    Re: undecided with honey supers

I also heard - NEVER use a queen excluder during the winter. If the cluster moves up, the queen could be left behind because of the excluder and freeze.
