    Re: Requeen with Buckfast Queen

You pull old queen from hive 3 days before the arrival of new queen. Put your buckfast in the hive between frames in her cage like you do when you hive a new package. Pull the cork off the candy plug...

Re: My recipe/method for sugar blocks

I have made 2 batches in the last week. One was put in the oven at 200 for 3 hours and got slightly gooey on the bottom . The other I set out next to a heat run near a sunny window and dried in a few...

Re: What happened to my bees?

Yeah same thing here. Lots of goldenrod and bees did not work it. We had plenty of moisture. Bees were not on it. No dirty socks smell. They worked it at the same location 2 years ago. Produced tons...

Re: What happened to my bees?

Im north of you....we got dumped on too. Did you feed that hive this fall? A couple of mine were light in August and I fed and got them up to winter weight. One has sugar bricks on it just in case.

    Re: Observation Hive

I did the same thing a few weeks ago for a demo at our Middle school. I pulled frames the previous afternoon when it was warmer. Temps dropped the day of demo and it was rainy so I waited until the...

Re: Preparing a single deep for winter

I put sugar bricks on my hives last fall when I wrapped them for winter. It caused them to not go down in the hive like they are supposed to. Hives died out and I had tons of frames of capped honey...
  12. Re: Have skunks- can't use imidacloprid a neonicotinoid

Skunks decimated my 2 hives last year due to fence failure. You need to get rid of them. Trapping is the best option and a bullet to the head. We got one this spring and threw it trap and all into a...

Re: Something went very wrong, very fast ...

Powdered sugar does contain corn starch. Powdered sugar can be easily made in a blender.
  14. Re: Stupid question: how many beekeepers are scared of bees?

I had the same thing with 2 aggressive hives. It was a little scary pulling up deep frames for the first time. I just got used to it and told myself in 21 days it would start to get better!

    Re: Old Sol Apiaries?

Our club ordered from Winters this year. Many delays on the queen delivery and when they arrived, we weren't notified ahead of time to let our post office know.

    Re: Funny looking Queen

I bought 2 nucs brought up from Florida that were very aggressive. Not fun at all to work and really downright scary. I don't blame this beek for being cautious. I ended up requeening and losing...

    queen laying

How long on average does it take for a queen to start laying after shipping and a 3-4 day release from a cage. This would be a mated queen obviously.
  19. Re: Anyone seen large queen losses/supercedures

I think we may be seeing the results of poorly mated queens either due to genetics, poor mating weather or both. In the case of 2 of my hives, the apiary in question has had past problems with poor...

    Re: Dead queen, super bummed

I lost 2 pol line VSH CA queens the same way. Missed queen cell. I kept one virgin. She successfully mated.
  22. Re: Anyone seen large queen losses/supercedures

Lots of queen losses here too. Simply disappearing or supersedure. Making it really hard for colonies to build up.
  23. Re: Introduce new queen to queenless nuc or make new nuc

Italians do make looser clusters but if you have access to your hives, you can put a sugar brick or candy in the hive Jan or Feb to get them through the winter.
