There are some people that feed their bees by placing the syrup in a shallow container and pushing it into the hive entrance.
Or, just fill an empty comb with syrup and place it where the bees can...
They might be holding yards that are used to assemble the hives for loading onto large trucks and trailers.
Re: 5:3 syrup
5/3 = 1.666 or 1.7
3/3 = 1
5:3 = 1.7 : 1
Or, just make a 2:1 syrup
Good luck.
Trachael mites can also cause winter dead outs.

EFB in the 4.9 mm cell?
That's an observation, a bacteria that prefers 4.9 over 5.4.
Stastically speaking.
If we had more colonies in the data base, that would be very interesting.
Or, the hive...
Take a close look at the 4.9 mm and then look at the 5.4 mm you should be able to see the difference.
Annoyed?
Not at all.

:)A sterol, 24-methylene cholesterol, one of my favorites.
It has a nice ring to it and it goes with bacon quite well!

Try to locate a book titled The Hive and the Honey Bee.
It has a chapter towards the back of the book that covers the topic of wintering bees.
It has diagrames of hives for wintering.
Good luck,
beemandan,
Here's the URL that I tried to post this morning.

Re: HFCS
It's how the HFCS is stored that's important.

Dan,
:)You are on a bee topic!
Honey bees were sent into space with their stingers trimed. They were observed for comb building in zero gravity!
You might consider a simple flat cover that's the same size as your nuc made out of 15/16" OSB, 3/4' pine or plywood.
Good luck,
Do they look like this?...
This search should provide additional data.
