  1. Re: Opposite of feeding. Killing bees for honey production

We winter hives up here that are so full of bees that you couldn't fit another one in either brood chamber just fine with 5+ months of well below zero weather. Guys out west get them through worse. ...

Re: Moving bees at night w or w/o nets

If it's the law I would just plead ignorance... Netting sucks and generally nobody knows about the laws surrounding bees. Ratchet straps on the other hand are a great idea.

Re: Moving bees at night w or w/o nets

Just have a smoker going. Usually don't even need a veil unless you shake a pallet somehow. Also when being pulled over with bees on turn on as many lights as your truck has, it will shorten the...

Re: Splitting/Equalizing 6 weeks before the flow

You won't typically get as much honey from a split as a big production colony... For a hive to make 200 lbs in our climate for instance that third box on top should be wall to wall with bees. You...

Re: Splitting/Equalizing 6 weeks before the flow

Depends on a lot of factors. Do you have drawn comb for the rest of the frames? If so four frames of wall to wall capped brood would probably be close to a good production colony in 6 weeks. Keep...

    Re: snow bound hives/locations

I really think you'll be further ahead knocking your queens back a bit and splitting out of a stronger colony... A monster hive can have brood robbed just about weekly as long as you don't get too...

    Re: re-queening strong hives

Is that to say you had 100% success on the ones that didn't tear your cells down? Did you have a marked queen in the beginning and an unmarked one a few weeks later?

  14. Re: Cowen 60 Sump In floor or On floor Opinions needed

The sump I use is about a 135 gallon infloor model with about a 16"x16" piece dropped below the base of the pan by 1-1/2" in one corner where the pump sits. The whole pan has fall to that corner and...

That queen is likely to be dead by spring either way, only difference is whether you let the hive go with it. Look at it as a cost of early expansion in Canada. Maybe try requeening half and see...
