Re: how long before adding second brood box?

A lot of people say when the bees are using 8 of the 10 frames or 80%
If you put it on too soon the bees might work upward instead of finishing the outside frames.

  6. Re: Depending on your replies, I may have to quit before I start.

Trapping out the colony without getting the queen will end that genetic line. You'd be killing the one thing you want to save.
Catching swarms from that hive is the way to go, you would get one of...
  7. Re: Smallest population you can start a colony with

I've started nucs with a mated queen, frame of honey & 2 frames of bees with capped brood. Shake a few extra bees in the nuc & you're good to go.
  8. Re: Backyard Beekeeper that develops bad neighbor relation issues ... to the extremes

A commercial friend of mine had 20 hives on a 6 acre lot he owns. A neighbor complained to the city & county.
He was asked to remove the hives.

Re: Anyone missing bees out of almonds?

I saw some matching that description in the cherries, on Hofman Ln in Brentwood last weekend.
The beekeeper didn't have names or phone numbers on his hives.

Re: PA apiary license and sales tax

For us if we get a free re-sale license we don't have to pay sales tax on beekeeping items we purchase.
Of course at this point we should be charging taxes on our sales.

I don't have a contractors license, so legally I can't contract to do the repair.

Re: Green Drone Frames for mediums

Wood frame with a Popsicle stick comb guide works better than the green ones. Put it between a couple brood frames & the bees will draw it for drone use.

Re: Any other Alameda county bee keepers????

Have you spoken to the Alameda Co Beekeepers club?
A person in Martinez is having trouble with the city right now. They claim that having an apiary makes him "large scale agriculture"
