    Weird situation - Drone-Laying Queen?

Hi all - one of my spring packages didn't accept its queen, so I put in a frame of open brood from another hive and they raised some queen cells right away. A few weeks later (3-4?), it looks like...

    BT/BTI question

Does anyone know if BT / BTI ("Bacillus thuringiensis serovar israelensis" used to kill mosquito larve) will harm honeybees?

    ground hops?

Has anyone ever experimented with sprinkling ground hops in a hive to work in a similar fashion to powdered sugar, i.e. the act of grooming to remove the hops may also remove varroa? Hopguard is not...

Re: Combine or Feed & Wait?

Completely forgot about the idea of using a double screen and placing on top during the winter! Thanks! To reduce the weak hive down to one box (or put in 5 frame nuc), would you just shake them off?...

    Combine or Feed & Wait?

Have 2 hives, one now very strong from a package this spring, one weak, a year older. The weak hive had been very strong, but was dwindling, and I discovered it was overrun with mites in early...

    Re: water for bees

How far away from the hives should the water be? I have a bucket about 5 feet away from mine, which they never touch.

    Re: first time extracing

Agree with Peter - we extracted 5 medium frames last week and got about 18 lbs. Used a hand cranked 2-frame extractor after uncapping w/ knife and/or scraping caps. Maybe crushing yields less?

Re: Found lots of brood as I requeened

Didn't inadvertabtly transfer the other queen - saw her in the other hive right after my inspection of the big one (she has the white dot -- would that they were born that way!). TriJim, I think...

Re: Found lots of brood as I requeened

I may have stumbled upon a sure-fire way to find an MIA hive-raised queen - go drive a few hours away and buy another!

Found lots of brood as I requeened

Update on swarmed hive I thought was queenless: About 3 weeks after a swarm, I added a frame of brood to my hive last week because it looked like their attempt to raise another queen had failed (no...

    Re: Smoker Basics

I may be new to this, but I recently learned how to light a mean smoker. Put a few dried white pine needles into the bottom of the smoker and then light a piece of torn-off egg carton and throw it...

Re: Advice about swarmed queenless (?) hive

Hi Michael - thanks so much for responding. I didn't have time to get to a computer to type this follow-up until this AM. To update you, I went in yesterday and took a frame of eggs w/ no bees from...

Advice about swarmed queenless (?) hive

My overwintered hive swarmed about May 9. Honey-bound. I went in on Friday the 13th (!) and cut out all but 2 big supercedure cells (NOT swarm cells - cut those too, because I think I misunderstood...
  14. Exposing nasanov gland as evidence of queen?

Had a hive that swarmed 2 weeks ago and was letting them raise their own queen. It's been pretty rainy and wet here and I'm worried about how she'll be getting out for that nuptial flight. There was...

    Cutting Queen Cells after swarm

My bees swarmed earlier this week - did not catch it (or even find it). I've heard that I should cut out all but two strong queen cells now to prevent an after swarm and be careful not to jostle...

    Re: Disasterous Evening

Thanks for the good humor, perspective and, yes, advice (I know I need it, was just feeling too upset to take it). It's a very strong hive, so MAC -- maybe you're right that they swarmed already! So...

    Disasterous Evening

Felt like a real winner having successfully overwintered my 1st hive and all going strong this spring. But I noticed an uncapped queen cup with larva in it on Sunday. I was told to switch out frames...
  18. Re: Delayed Queen Release - Too Cold?? How Long??

Update: released her yesterday afternoon with no problem at all. She slipped into the hive and I closed it up. Cross your fingers that all is well! Such fun.
  19. Re: Delayed Queen Release - Too Cold?? How Long??

I think the idea behind the 5-day release is to make sure she's accepted -- but what do I know! Thanks for the advice - will release her this afternoon.
  20. Delayed Queen Release - Too Cold?? How Long??

I just installed my first package on Saturday afternoon (4/30). My mentor uses what I'll call the "controlled release method" for the queen, i.e., he doesn't remove any cork until 4 to 5 days after...

    Re: Burr comb between boxes

Very interesting, thanks. Fits right in with my observations, because some of the burr comb I scraped off had drone larvae in it -- and I actually saw a mite or two on them. May try a frame of drone...
