    Re: 8 Frame Mediums

I am in your area and I have used 3 boxes for a brood chamber for years. Like Mike B. I just keep adding medium supers without an excluder.
    Works for me.

    Re: Sugar bricks won't harden

I made a 2 inch tall "shim" with 1/4 inch screen on the bottom. I rim the bottom with a 3/8 inch piece of wood to
maintain bee space. I also drill a 3/4 inch hole in the front and place a piece of...

    Re: Nuc not doing anything?

If my queens don't lay in 14 days after hatching I discard them. I may be doing it wrong
but that is the criteria I use for my queens. Good luck!

    Re: Nuc not doing anything?

I am in Missouri also and all my drones are gone for the season. my queens have cut way back on laying as the temps are
going down fast. You will be very lucky to get a virgin queen mated now.

    Re: Sugar bricks won't harden

CWOOD6 is correct. Your sugar melted and it won't harden until you add more sugar. Let them air dry.
I stack them in a crisscross pattern and let them dry for a few days. Works every time for me.
  6. How to add more bees and mated queen to queenless nuc with low numbers?

I made some nucs up with queen cells last month. Some nucs ended up queenless and low on bees. I want to add more bees to the nucs
to build them up. And I want to add a mated queen to each to make...

Re: Fourth day with robbers on 4 hives

I am having the same problem. Robbers have already emptied 2 nucs. I fought them
in two ways. I made some robbing screens for a few of the hives. It is made out of 1/8
screen bent like a W shape...

    Re: How to stop robbing

    Wat is it telling, hireal?
5 colonies were getting robbed at the same time.
I shook the tree cluster, about the size of a grape fruit, into an empty hive and left it there for the night.
    Checked...

    Re: How to stop robbing

Today things seem to be back to semi-normal. I removed all the robber screens and reduced the entrances a bit. The heat has
some colonies bearding on the front porch as of noon today.
    I believe I...

    How to stop robbing

I know this has been asked and discussed many times on this forum. But I thought
I would ask it again just encase someone has come up with a miracle cure.

I have 10 full hives in this yard. So...

Re: Are Bees about to swarm??

It doesn't look like your hive is going to swarm based only on your first picture. That is probably bearding behavior. Bearding is when it is too hot and humid in the hive and they are outside...

    Re: Mann Lake Experiences

I had ordered 300 wedge top grooved bottom frames from them. I also ordered hook top foundation at the same time.
When they arrived I quickly realized the foundation was too long for the groove...
  14. Re: New Bee keeper confused on status of hive. Please advise.

I am thinking those torn queen cells were done when you separated the frames during your inspection.. I have never seen bees do that
kind of damage. with those sealed brood cells still in there...
  15. Re: how long should I wait for hive to raise new queen?

without going into too much details.
It sounds to me that your colony swarmed and took the queen mother with them. They left queen cells to replace her.
Colonies always make several queens when...

    Re: Temperatures for inspecting hives

My bees fly at 38 degrees. I would not want to be pulling frames and doing a complete inspect at that temp.
I feel more confident with temps in the 60's with no wind is what I follow.

Re: My Ant Proof Hive Stand Actually Works!

    Re: Medium nucs

I winter in 5 frame medium nucs regularly. I use Decoates nuc plans here. One thing you need to take note of though.

Yes, I do not like BAYER. Just do a Google search on BAYER, World War 11, Germany. BAYER is also the company that manufactures NEONICITINOIDS. And many studies have shown this chemical to be a big...
