  1. Re: Expensive Breeder Queens are a waste of money...

I do what others have said, I bring in a couple breeder queens every other year or so, breed daughters from them and distribute them throughout the rest of my hives. I don't have a ton of hives so to...

Re: How long can I use the same comb?

I have comb that is 14-15 years old, from my first hives I started. I have never noticed any ill effects related to comb age. I think as long as you know the history of the comb, then you are fine.

    Re: Honey blends

This was a gift box at a k-Mart in Ohio. The legality of it aside, I just hate to see a company that screws over many hardworking people that go to great lengths to avoid selling a impure product....

    Honey blends

Since I like drinking my HFCS straight outa the bottle.... I guess they consider this "cutting cost"?
  5. Re: Buying pure AI VSH breeder queen from a southern state

I tried some of Adams vsh breeders this year, so far the daughters have done very well and are looking good. I would recommend them.
  6. Re: Wanting an opinion on a reasonable number of hives to learn the business with

I will agree with 50. It is a large enough number you will see a decent return on if managed right. It is also a large enough number to test your beekeeping skill and also have resources (aka bees)...
  7. Re: What Are You Using for Bait In Wasp Traps

Cut the top part of a 2 liter pop bottle, invert it and tape it back on. Fill with about 2 inches of Mountain Dew. Best trap I've ever used.

Re: Effects of prolonged rain on hive?

Even despite the hives bringing in tons of pollen this time of year, the off and on rain can have them low, especially your splits. It's ok to feed syrup, but don't forget about there protein...

Re: Installing Bee Package in the cold

Since you have drawn comb, go to Home Depot and buy a empty clean spray bottle. Fill this with sugar syrup, 1:1 or 2:1 or anywhere between I don't think it matter my personally, fill 2-3 of the 5...

    Re: Supplementing a package install

For me it would depend on the progress of the overwintered hive. If it's brooded up well and has a population filling more than one 10 frame deep at a minimum, I would take a frame of young...

    Re: Drone colonies per queen

That was a good read Eduardo, thanks.

Re: Adding brood to new package

From what I understand, the broodless period may be a reason that the packages want to supersede, and adding young brood at the time you install helps preventing some amount of supercedure in...

Trying to plan out the future, does anyone have any numbers for how many drone colonies should be in an area compared to how many queens you are raising per batch?

Re: What is your favorite hive configuration?

I like 10 frame deeps, my second choice is 5 frame deeps (nucs), however these are hard to stay ahead of! But for some reason they just produce and winter great. I don't even own a medium anymore.

    Re: Fastest way to increase

Maybe a little repetitive, but in my mind some basic key points.

I would keep pollen patties on them almost constantly untill winter, feed syrup as needed to stimulate but not backfill. I would...

    Re: 10 Nuc Increase

I would build them up to double strength, 20 good frames feeding pollen constantly and syrup as needed (don't want to backfill them just enough that they have a usable supply)

    I would then evenly...

    Re: 2x4 Hive Stand

I've used 2x4 stands of various shapes in the past. Most all of them started to bow/sag pretty bad.

I now use 2x12's, I nail in a square lay on the ground and set the hives on them. Gives me a...

Re: Treat or not to treat for mites
