    Inspection yesterday :-)

So I had 3 swarms and two after swarms this year. The swarms happened at the end of April and a couple days into May. I caught one swarm and let the rest go.
All three hives that swarmed are doing...

    Re: AfterSwarm

I understand that the mated queen left.
I was thinking that the hive would have to be queen right before an afterswarm would leave with a virgin queen.
I’m not a bee, but it seems if all the...

    AfterSwarm

So I’ve had a couple after swarms. I read that after swarms usually include a virgin queen.
So the ? – Since these are virgin queens in the after swarm, can I assume that the hive is queen right...

    Another one

My wife just called me and said while she planting in the garden, she heard buzzing. She looked up at our hives and saw a swarm starting. She ran inside :)

So I have three (3) hives and they did...

    Re: Where does it end?

Same issue with me. I ordered two nucs for this spring, thinking maybe my 3 hives wouldn’t all make it thru the winter (WRONG), they are booming. So I just had 3 swarms and 1 after swarm in one week....

Re: Do you ever feed swarms?

    Good ? imthedude
Caught my first swarm over the weekend, I added a frame of honey to the nuc I put them in. Figured it wouldn’t hurt.
I may be on the right track.

Saw them swam, watched to where they congregated to. 15 yards from my other hives, 3 feet off the ground on a think limb-
First swarm I caught, very cool.

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

I open the brood nest on my 3 hives and added supers on March 24 to help prevent a swarm. 6 day’s later (4/30) I had a swarm. Guess I was a little late trying to prevent this. Last year one hive...

Re: Thinking of a quilted boxes

    Great guidance,
    Thanks folks.
I’ll add the #8 hardware cloth, about a ¼ of an inch or so above the bottom so it will give me a little extra room over the top bars (feeding, patties…etc.)

    Thinking of a quilted boxes

Never thought about a quilt box till this year.
I have three strong hives going into winter.
I have an old deep, so I would cut three sections out of it, width of 2-3 inches, add some ventilations...

Re: Screened bottom boards ok for winter?

I close mine in the winter, but drill a few holes in the boards and add a couple shims under the inner cover for ventilation thinking it helps remove moisture

    Building up a second deep

    Hi all,
    I have three hives.
One Hive (hive 1) swarmed at the end of May. That hive now, a single deep, is doing well. It took a while to build up, not sure why.
The other two hives (hives 2 and...

    Re: Oh Well, Bye, Bye

When I go into the hive and if there are still a lot of bee's, can I take a frame with a queen cell on it put it in a NUC, with say 3 more frames of brood and honey, or, is that crazy talk.

    Second Super, when?

    First the question:
I’m starting my fourth year of beekeeping. I have only gotten honey once and that was during the fall flow (33 pounds.) This year I had a hive make it through winter ( I treated)...
  25. Re: What feeding ratio for new nuc in CT/Feeder Tweaks

I have the same feeder too. I had a lot of dead bees my first year so the next year I lined the inside with #8 hardware cloth. I was surprised how well it worked. It was for 10 frame deeps....
