    Re: Boy was i wrong!

The learning curve is really steep, even when you read as much as you can. I had a year when I put the mouse guards on too late, and I had a few hives with trapped mice. What a mess!

  2. Re: A dearth of knowledge on the knowledge of dearth

Question to those with observation hives, can you see the workers passing nectar and filling cells? I can hear it now - "I HAD to get an observation hive! How else can I be sure if there is a dearth...

    Re: Viability of swarms?

I do swarms and cut outs if they are not too far away. Don't do to many cut outs because I will not do them for free, the people who want it done for free usually have already sprayed them anyway. ...

    Re: Accidental Beehive

I would also leave the top hole alone as long as it is small. I would put some rigid foam insulation around the box, and otherwise leave them alone and cross your fingers. If you do put an open...

    Re: Unusually worm November

Well, for right now all I can suggest is monitor the hives weight closely, you may need to feed them sugar or sugar blocks this winter.

    Re: Unusually worm November

Are your bees still finding nectar? If it is that warm, are there still flowers?

Re: My recipe/method for sugar blocks

I have been having trouble getting the blocks to dry, Lauri, how thick are your blocks? I think I made some too thick. Ganged together my nucs a few days ago, ended up using pieces of the thinner...

How cold is too cold to move a hive?

:scratch:Well, this sudden cold snap has caught me out, I admit it. I was going to gang my nucs together and insulate them, but I am afraid to move them in temps in the 20s. What is your opinion on...

    Re: Foundation-less frames: my experience

For those of us who do use removal of drone comb as part of a plan to reduce Varroa, it is not necessary to wait for the drone comb to be capped, is it? I can see where it may be optimal, but I tend...

    Re: Foundation-less frames: my experience

I have just recently switched to foundationless myself, the bees will AT FIRST draw a lot of drone comb. They are driven to have drones, and will jump at the chance to finally raise them. Once they...

If I am understanding you correctly, the part that you found unacceptable was too much drone comb?

    Ultrabreeze Suit Fabric Question

The Ultrabreeze Suits used to be made by a couple, if I am remembering correctly. Mine has been great, but has taken a lot of abuse, with all of the cutouts I have done. It now has multiple holes...
  14. Re: I'm pretty sure I killed my hive today :-(

Waterbug, if you are not good at spotting the queen (and trust me, I am right there with you on that one) you might want to invest in a shaker box for when you absolutely, positively have to find the...

Re: rat peed on comb… sigh

I wouldn't save it. Powerful stuff, rat pee. I walked into a friends large horse barn once (I was over there almost daily), and said "You've got a rat in here now." My neighbor said "How can you...

Re: Just think of all the bee forage.....

Justin, interesting point. I just planted a big section of my front yard in miniclover, I wonder if I will have the same problem. Here in Iowa we get alot of snow usually, so it may not be an issue...
  17. Re: They say Americans are getting grumpy about the never ending rising prices these

Lauri, I don't know how you are doing your corners on boxes, but if you do box joints, a jig is wonderful. I asked for an Incra jig for Christmas (I am also female, and my Christmas lists always...
  18. Re: Should Holes Be Sealed With Wax Or Tape?

I find tape will fail before winter's end. I would go with the wax and monitor. Yellow jackets and wasps aren't going to be around much longer.

You definitely need to check your mite levels before anything else, I think. When was the last time this hive was inspected?

If you can't find anyone else, I live near Anamosa, and I have some nucs. Would be willing to do the split next year thing.

  25. Re: bee-friendly mosquito control for Atlanta?

CO2 traps can work, but take weeks for the population to crash, and they ones that actually work are expensive. I suspect the best you will be able to accomplish is having your neighbors inform you...
