  1. Re: Type or brand of vitamins and electrolytes

    Mike,

Thank you for the information. I wasn't sure what the ingredients and the amounts should be. I'll look up a place to get it. I was hoping someone would reply to the "differences" in the...
  2. Re: Type or brand of vitamins and electrolytes

Just checked all the ingredients and the only difference is that mine has
    Vitamin B-12 --min. 2.5Mg. per 8 oz.,
    Ascorbic Acid--min. 32% -- max. 37% and
    Sodium-- min. 32 % -- max. 37%

    Is...
  3. Re: Type or brand of vitamins and electrolytes

Thanks for the information. I will check the ingredients with the one on ebay.
OK just a sprinkle. What would be the consequence if too much were added?

  4. Type or brand of vitamins and electrolytes

I was wondering if the 8 oz. package I bought locally is OK to use. It's called Vitamins & Electrolytes from Durvet? It's water soluble, premix and it says it's for poultry, swine, ruminants and...

    Re: Something went through- Bear?

I checked the hives yesterday afternoon and all were flying. I do have bricks on top of the hives but added a cement block to this one. Still plan on contacting my neighbor to see if he can move his...

    Re: Something went through- Bear?

Yikes. Sorry, Bison, about your apiary. I guess it's a mystery- so far. A friend is putting up a couple of game camera's. Right now he has them in the wrong place- but will ask him to move them to...

    Something went through- Bear?

Just noticed, from a distance, that one of the supers that I have on the hives was askew. (The super is housing the sugar supply.) I hope the hive is still living and will check this afternoon when...

    Re: Fondant is a pain

I'm still using the dry sugar on newspaper but would like to try the fondant or brick next year. Is there a possibility of adding too much vinegar and I don't know where to get the vitamin addition....
  13. Re: Queen- after removing supers- think I removed a queen...

Thanks for the commiseration... I feel a bit foolish even to have done this. It isn't as though I started a few years ago.

I guess I'll have to write off one of these hives. I'll check for...
  14. Re: Queen- after removing supers- think I removed a queen...

If I do find emergency queen cell(s)- they don't have time to get her hatched and working. It would identify which one I will lose for the next year.

I had thought that maybe I could see some bees...
  15. Queen- after removing supers- think I removed a queen...

I was wondering if there are any ways to find the correct hive if a queen is found in a super after removing them from several hives.

I found a cluster of bees on two of my empty supers after...

    Re: Propolus 2/3 across entrance

Yes- I can still install the mouse guards. Though I wonder if it's necessary with so much propolis already guarding the entrance.

I am still wondering if the bees can remove that much propolis...

    Re: Propolus 2/3 across entrance

When they built it they were a small swarm. Right now there are a lot of bees on the front entrance probably getting rid of the drones.

Maybe they still need it but are they able to remove such a...

    Propolus 2/3 across entrance

I had a late swarm given to me. I hadn't noticed until a week ago that they had made a barrier of propolus across 2/3's of the entrance with a few holes in it. The other third is open.

    They are...
  20. Re: Have skunks- can't use imidacloprid a neonicotinoid

    Jackam et al,

Thanks for your great advise. I had planned on checking PA laws... though I have done it for groundhogs and other problem critters. I do know how to handle a gun and have a few more...
  21. Re: Have skunks- can't use imidacloprid a neonicotinoid

Thank you for all your replies and the precautions. I do have both a single shot .22 and one with a clip. Good to know about the game laws re: pests. I'll look into getting some florescent paint-...
  22. Re: Have skunks- can't use imidacloprid a neonicotinoid

I don't have an air rifle but do have other types. About 6 years back, and before that, I did have problems with the skunks bothering the hives but not in the last few years.

    These are all good...
  23. Re: Have skunks- can't use imidacloprid a neonicotinoid

    rwlaw,

I didn't know about the ammonia soaked rags. We might try that first.

    Thanks for the idea,
    Tanya
  24. Re: Have skunks- can't use imidacloprid a neonicotinoid

To begin- I do give the lead treatment to groundhogs and some racoons but since skunks are nocturnal and you can't shoot after sundown...!

We are having LOTS of skunk "emissions" at night and it's...
  25. Have skunks- can't use imidacloprid a neonicotinoid

I was looking for something that kills the grubs that skunks eat. Been having some very unpleasant nights.

I found "Imidacloprid" but then found it was a neonicotinoid, which I understand is a...
