    Re: lady bugs in hive

Just keeping warm, bee hives are a good place to do it in Winter.

Re: 207 Hives stolen, Sacramento area, near 99

The almonds brings out the demand Tejones, it does happen every year. This year seems a little worse then previous or it's a little easier to get the word out via FB pages etc... and we're hearing...

    Re: Is it a loss?

I wouldn't consider it a loss but I watch those queens very carefully in the future and tend to not increase from them unless I'm seeing if I can really integrate resistance to some degree.

    Re: Wearing white

I don't suit up, I wear plenty of dark clothes, bees don't mind.

    Re: Genetically Modified Varroa Mites

Beeologics did do some initial RNAi work, but it was only 40% effective and cost was about 10k per hive. I'm sure with some fine tuning, it could be more effective and the process was easy, feed the...

Still waiting on my frames, got the box in December.
  11. Re: Kelley news letter says: don't feed your bees GMO sugar!

Neonics are an insecticide, not an herbicide and they are systemic in their mode of action which means the plant uptakes them and disperses it throughout it's tissues and some are metabolized into...

    Re: Almond bloom

Some of it is varietal as well, the feral ones bloom earlier as well, but the nuts are bitter.
  13. Re: Kelley news letter says: don't feed your bees GMO sugar!

Nucleotide tri-phosphate discussion incoming, or nucleoside if you really get technical, just never liked saying it that way! I have to admit it's been awhile since I thought about that stuff.

    Re: Superseded - Advice Needed

Queens get superceded for a reason, the old queen is on her way out, no reason to save her. Her current brood pattern has nothing to do with her longevity at this point, the bees sense she's failing...

Re: using mites to control mites?

I tried it for two years, didn't do much in the way of controlling mites, don't mean to burst any bubbles. Perhaps it's just too hot here in the summer too.

Re: Treatment Free and 2/3 year survival

I don't see the 2-3 year build up here. It's pretty much a single year buildup to crash a hive. There's a few who advocate resetting the clock if you make it that far into year 2 or 3, either by...

    Re: Dead hive, mites?

It's a game of odds, that's why, and betting on 'red' is a good choice for why seemingly booming hives are void of bees 2 weeks later in the winter... Also, I speak a lot from personal experience. ...

  22. Re: Kelley news letter says: don't feed your bees GMO sugar!

So, all the other alternative crap that used to be sprayed on crops that is much worse than Round-Up was much better for us and the environment?
  23. Re: Are/Can almonds be grown in other areas of the country?

They don't like moisture, that is the main factor. I believe Spain grows 20% of the almonds, California is 80%. Most areas the diseases from too much humidity or too much rain post nut set either...
  24. Re: Kelley news letter says: don't feed your bees GMO sugar!

The main issue is most ordinary people know nothing about Molecular biology or biochemistry. The only GMO beets on the market are Round-Up ready, so this eliminates any Bt out of the discussion. ...
