  1. Re: You can't teach an old, frame hive beekeeper, new tricks

I only said generally because I've never seen a bar design that ALWAYS produces straight combs. This is, of course, because there's another factor: the bees. You can, indeed, look through many past...
  2. Re: You can't teach an old, frame hive beekeeper, new tricks

At this point we've made well over 100,000 of these bars and they generally work very well, both in our own hives and those of our customers. I've not had better luck with longer/steeper angles....

  4. Re: Is it a good idea to start a Warre hive in a neigborhood?

Any type of hive can swarm a lot if it wants to. Most hives in Portland, Oregon are Langstroth hives, and I get calls every year from beekeepers saying their Langstroth hive has swarmed 2+ times....

    Re: Juniper vs. Varroa Mites

This is the study they probably read: http://juniper.oregonstate.edu/bibliography/documents/phpW3BwYe_royce.pdf

We've been pondering offering a juniper product line, being in Oregon and having...
  8. Re: Introducing package bees to a Virgin KTBH

If the weather isn't too cold I lay the cage on the bottom, screen up and dump the package on top of her. This way they don't build comb around her. Otherwise, if they've been in there with her a...

    Re: Selling top bar nucs?

That's the difficulty, of course. Bars/combs that fit the majority of the customer's hives. Many in the Portland metro area use hives made by us, so they obviously fit. Some of them build their hives...

    Re: Selling top bar nucs?

I sell dozens of them here in Portland, Oregon. Dozens, only because I don't have enough hives to do more.

Re: How to add Observation Windows

We used to route out holes on the hives we build and sell. Over the years, one of the most frequent requests was the ability to view the bees from one end to the other, regardless of which comb they...

Re: How to build cheap top bars.

I've made thousands of them myself with a table saw. If I was still making them myself in the garage, I'd probably just cut them to 1 3/8" wide and then put a kerf in them along with a popsicle...
  14. Re: Given that you could design your own beehive, what would you do different?

    Fusion_power,

I don't know about commercial...but I do move my hives occassionally for various reasons (not pollination contracts or anything). Since they use cleat-style handles, they take up a...
  15. Re: Given that you could design your own beehive, what would you do different?

I use around 15-20 Warre hives in my own apiary at any given time (square boxes), and I've never had any of them blow over. They get propolized together just as well as any Langstroth boxes. I don't...

    Re: Geez, what now... robbing?

    Tom,

Sorry about the loss. I do urge you to try baiting that empty hive in the spring, and getting your name on any local swarm lists that you can. I've had MUCH better success with swarms than I...

    Re: Geez, what now... robbing?

    Tom,

Sounds like you did the right things. Hopefully they make it! I lost a Langstroth hive a few weeks ago due to robbing (I wasn't there fast enough to save it). I know how it feels!

    Best,...
  20. Re: What fabric should I buy for both quilt and hive cover and how big should I cut i

Canvas or burlap from the fabric store works fine. We use canvas on the hives we sell because it looks nice. However, most of our hives still have burlap for the quilt boxes.

  22. Re: closing up side entrances on TBH for winter

    Amanda,

Each comb in our top bar hives, when completely full of honey, are somewhere around 7lbs. If they've got 4 full, plus honey at the top of each of their other combs, they sound decent. I've...
  23. Re: closing up side entrances on TBH for winter

    TIA,

If you've got that many bees fanning at the entrance(s), I'd probably leave it at this point and wait until they retreat farther into the hive. How much honey do they have stored? I usually...
  24. Re: closing up side entrances on TBH for winter

I would either leave it as is, as they are likely to close up the end entrance a bit with propolis if they don't like it. Or move the middle bung, clear out the propolis, put it on the end and swap...
