  1. Re: going rate for pollination of Alfalfa going to seed

This spray risk is news to me, they dont run to seed around here very often. What are they spraying for? What causes all the damage? Also, i thought honey bees were poor polinators of alfalfa? Any...

Re: Wall thickness, why always 3/4"

Canadian supers are almost all 7/8" wall thickness. Stronger joints, less splitting and deeper handles are the result. I much prefer them, even if they are 12% heavier.

    Re: Escape boards

Thanks Ian. I have heard of people using the ditch witch but it seems awkward for that purpose. Your ezyloader does look attractive, but i cant afford/justify it yet. Im tinkering with a few ideas...

    Escape boards

I have never used Escape Boards, but they sound appealing. Currently during a flow, i just tip off the boxes and wait till dark to return and load the honey, or else I use fume boards. This year I...

    Re: Hive box problem

That kinda stuff drives me crazy. I build enough boxes now, that I can't make them all perfect. But man, it burns my butt when they are wobbly like that old bar table.

  11. Re: My excel Queen Rearing Calender. Identifies which nuc needs attention.

Im not sure I follow you. In my sheet the cell builders are colour coded with the mating nuc set that those cells go into. I plan to paint or number my mating nucs to match the series on the sheet....

  13. Re: My excel Queen Rearing Calender. Identifies which nuc needs attention.

Ian, if you follow my schedule, the queens will actually be in the nuc for 21 days. It could easily be adapted to 14 days, but I want my nucs to grow strong as I plan to winter them. When they get...

Dont forget a nail in the side of the end bar into the top bar. Really keeps that top bar tight.

Does anyone have nucs on a similar 3 way rotation?

Re: Canadian effects of exchange rates

The closed canadian boarder works very well for those who can keep their bees alive over winter. If the boarder were to open, anyone could be a successful beekeeper. I would need to compete for...
  17. Re: Simple Queen rearing Calander from Glenn Apiaries

Well squarepeg, I'm not sure. I only have 2 mini's with built in feeders, and when I first got them, I cut drawn comb out of a full sized frame and placed it in the mini. It is slow and painful. I...
  18. Re: Simple Queen rearing Calander from Glenn Apiaries

The small styrofoam mini's work pretty good, because they close bee tight with ventilation, and have a place for feed. What I found works best on those is: Shake bees from another apiary into a...

I can't find a way to embed the file. Sorry. I will post it when I figure it out. If someone knows how to do it, I can email them the file, and they can upload it.

  21. Re: Simple Queen rearing Calander from Glenn Apiaries

I am using a logic controller that is much too elaborate for this purpose. It’s a http://www.controlbyweb.com/x310/ and I do not recommend it for this purpose. I also use it to control my wintering...
  22. My excel Queen Rearing Calender. Identifies which nuc needs attention.

    Hello All,

I've seen lots of threads that deal with methods of getting cells built, extablishing mating nucs, methods to make the best queens. What I haven't seen is a discussion on timing for...
  23. Re: Simple Queen rearing Calander from Glenn Apiaries

This year I am contemplating making sure its water proof and locating the incubator directly in the yard with the cell builder, so the transfer is instant. (I have the cell builders near the house,...
  24. Re: Simple Queen rearing Calander from Glenn Apiaries

I built an Incubator out of 2 ICF styrofoam honey supers, with an insulated top and bottom. Add a controller, a lightbulb, water spunge, done. It has the built in frame rest, Allowing you to pull...

With the decline of the Canadian dollar, I expect our queen imports to be much more expensive.
