If you have a single hive that you like out of many others in your apiary and you want to propagate its line, by destroying queens and raising new ones from your best hive, then you must first deal...
@Michael
It is fascinating to see you swinging for a home run with your citation of the Collison paper. Good luck! I must reserve opinion however because that paper is two decades old and although...
@Ted
I just got into this thread for the sake of the truth since nobody seemed to be addressing the original poster's point properly. I sympathize with your point of view. I have no intention of...
I like plastic foundation, the bees draw it fine when managed properly. It can be scraped off if they mess it up, either by building queen cells in the middle of the face or by building comb bridges...
εὕρηκα! indeed Archimedes. Although the ancient greeks did have hot tubs, cave men did not. As you have one it is a windfall for you to make incidental use of it like this, a solution good for you....
@WiredForStereo
It may be a myth, but if so it would not be the only one that influences beekeepers in their decision to go foundationless. There is even a passage in my copy of Root that claims...
Foundationless is not shown to be fraud by odfrank's experience in getting all drone comb because its proponents do not claim that foundation has no impact on the drone census. Historically...
@Summer
If I'm down Lavaca county way I'll look you up, catfish and shrimp sure are good, but you'll have to keep those cranky AHB critters to yourself. No doubt they are nasty. That only 4 people...
Checker boarding is a method of swarm control. Imagine that you have a hive in a single deep and the colony is expanding and getting crowded in that box. You need to do something or they will swarm....

I use to think it was copywright protection, i.e. protection against those people who copy things, the copywrights.

Inbreeding is a mixed story of benefits and drawbacks. It has good effects and bad. Among humans we do not like to do it because it leads to birth defects and genetic diseases in the children....
I had a box that rocked, just took it out on the driveway and pushed it around for a while. Problem solved.
Borage for forage! I cast my vote for planting borage. Of course it gets a bit tall, but it is great for turning neglected wasteland into no-maintenance cropland yielding honey.

Conjecture.
Foraging adults may track a larvicide in and endanger the brood. You might buy some and spray it on a frame of brood to see what happens. The total development time of brood could be increased. Daily...

There are pricy products on the market for painting hives and there are people who buy them. For some hobbyists expense is not a consideration. If you are willing to spend the money on a specialty...
Perhaps we should call the 7 5/8" boxes "Middle Sized" or "Mid-Size" saying "Mids" for short: Deep, Mid, Medium, Shallow.
I have an old version (34th) of Root with a passage reminiscent of that. The context furthermore elaborates making it clear that a similar idea is meant. Perhaps it shares the same original source...
@Mtn. Bee
Mann Lake sells their plastic Ritecell foundation in that size. I have bought some and I am satisfied with it. Western Bee sells Duragilt in that size which has a plastic inner core...
Call them intermediates. Mann Lake sold me frames to fit mine, and I was impressed with their service. I have some hive boxes that are 7 5/8" high. As I understand it deeps are 9 5/8", mediums are 6...
By position it would be a supercedure cell.

When I was working on that bee tree at night the fire was about ten feet from the tree. I would say as close as possible without the smoke going towards the hive. I might try five feet....
@millbeezhoney
I tried that; here is what happens.
First, the wax leaks out the ends if there is a gap so you learn you have to put a daub of glue at each end first just in case, or push a...
