Re: New Queen Laying drone brood?

I decided to stick with the split and see if I can pull them through. I gave them another frame of eggs two days ago. I checked today and the eggs haven't hatched yet. I looked at the other frames...

Re: New Queen Laying drone brood?

I'm pretty sure its a laying worker(s) situation now. I inspected again today and found no queen. Some of the cells now had multiple eggs. The worker brood frame from the other hive I added looks...

    New Queen Laying drone brood?

I made a walkaway split on July 13th. Everything was looking fine over the following week or so. There were plenty of bees in the box, and I noticed three good sized queen cells. On August 6th I...
  4. Re: What do you use for smoker fuel? Any tips on keeping it lit?

I use sawdust. I plug the bottom of a toilet paper tube with newspaper then pack in the sawdust. I start the smoker by lighting a few sheets of newspaper balled up. Once the newspaper is going...

    Re: Interesting bee predator

Can anyone tell me the name of the plant the spider is sitting on? And does it get little yellow flowers in the spring? We have it all over our landscape, but I never could identify it online.

Hi. Can anyone help me identify this bush? The bees and orioles were all over this thing yesterday. The bush is about 7 feet tall. The flowers are about 1.5 inches across.

  10. Re: What to do weak hive with laying workers or drone laying queen?

dgale, there are not many bees....and they are probably pretty old. I haven't seen worker brood in that hive this spring. I will take the small amount of capped worker brood from my transfer last...
  11. What to do weak hive with laying workers or drone laying queen?

I made it through my first winter with two hives. One is doing real well while the other is pretty weak. The weak hive has a small patch of drone brood across two frames. I assume there are laying...

Re: Anyone order Mann Lake supers/frames?

I have only bought frames, bottles and various tools from Mann Lake. Very satisfied with everything. Love the free shipping and they deliver quickly.
  13. Re: This doesn't look good......what are their chances?

Thought I would provide an update on this hive. It came through winter fine. Except for a lot of dead, moldy bees jammed into a corner of one of the deeps, the inside was spotless....nothing like...

Is it a bad idea to use foundationless frames when using a tangential extractor? Will the comb hold up? I was going to use medium sized supers and wire the frames, but I am starting to think this...

  19. Re: Found Bees Inside My 5 Frame Deep Swarm Trap Box

Are you sure this swarm didn't come from one of your other hives? If it did, you may have a queenless hive somewhere and may need to combine them back.

Re: When can I put on candy board in Michigan

How thick is a typical candy board? I was going to make mine a couple of inches deep. I thought that would reduce the number of times I had to replace it. Is two inches too thick?
