    Re: Hive color question.

What about duck tape? Comes in strange colors now but some of it won't last more that two weeks in wet weather so buy the super strong types.

Re: Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On

But if that activity is all over the hive when you check the frames I would requeen, during the last two years I've had that activity with lots of runny bees in several hives and every time the queen...

    Re: Carniolan Honey Production

The one thing that I learned this spring, is never stop feeding 1:1 sugar water until they stop taking it. The buildup is so critical for carnis because the queen will just stop laying if they can't...

    Re: New Queen getting balled

I don't know what you call balling? But if they show indifference to the queen box and you release her manually it's a 100% dead sentence. But a normal handfull glob of worker bees around the box is...
  5. Re: Since 1980 this is the worst April Non-flow I have every seen...

Good guys work there. Also make sure you have a queen before you pull the queen cell, I'm having problems right now with dud queens or no queen in the hive, over the last three weeks I've lost three...
  6. Re: Since 1980 this is the worst April Non-flow I have every seen...

Valley Farmers Coop in Midtown has all the Kelley Bee supplies that you would need for that.
  7. Re: Since 1980 this is the worst April Non-flow I have every seen...

I am but a lot of the trees are in bad shape, the bugs have really eaten up the leaves this year. My hives next to the river are in catch up mode right now. I pulled some burr comb today and it's...

That good smell is back and the girls are no longer sucking down sugar water.
  9. Re: Since 1980 this is the worst April Non-flow I have every seen...

In a normal year it's starts around April 20th and runs to mid-June. I pull the honey on July 4th weekend.
  10. Re: Since 1980 this is the worst April Non-flow I have every seen...

I keep most of my italians in Georgia which are doing very well. In Tn, it's surprising how much better the italians/mutts are doing compared to the russians & carnis. They had more stores to run...
  11. Since 1980 this is the worst April Non-flow I have every seen...

Since the last of the maples a vast majority of my hives are stuck in early March population size and very very low stores. I have bees in Kingston Tn and it looks like the late freezing temps into...

Re: Warning, feeding in Mid-April, very sad...

Ditto here in East Tn but I don't think that the tulip poplar blooms were hurt too bad, likely setback 3 to 5 days. Biggest issue now is no sunshine so no nectar but lots of stuff blooming. The...

Re: Effects of prolonged rain on hive?

Holly in bloom but no bee visits, mustard in the fields but no bee visits, zip on redbuds this year so for the past two weeks not much has been put into the supers. We had a great maple flow for two...
  15. Re: Fed up with two hot hives moved both back home, one will die and the other requee

They were on a buddy's farm so I didn't want anyone to get stung by them. I'm in the process of requeening them, all the brood boxes were pulled off this week and those bees were requeened. The...
  16. Fed up with two hot hives moved both back home, one will die and the other requeened.

Closed up both and put a screen top on, then started spraying dawn soap water on anything that flew in my direction. For past experience with these suckers the smoker just pizzes them off. Dropped...

    Re: Redbud in bloom...

REALLY? Bad weather for the past five days so it really doesn't matter what the bees think about redbud blooms.
I'm still feeding some hives and they have slowed down taking 1:1 ratio so they are...

  20. Re: How Much Capped Syrup is Enough? Spring Inspection.

I'm in Kingston Tn and I've added an empty super and checkerboarded with the existing medium above the full size hive body on my stronger hives. My italians are way ahead of my carni hives right now....

Re: How many shallow supers...and when?

In the past before mites and small hive beetles I would add 4 shallow supers (waxed frames/ not foundation) on a strong hive a week before tulip popular started blooming (April15-20th). Now I...
  23. Re: How long do you leave a swarm trap in the same location?

Right now in North Georgia, if I don't see bees within 30 mins I would not leave a box in any location. Scout bees will find it in a hurry so why leave a box in a bad location.

    Redbud in bloom...

Which I'm never impressed by since I've never seen a honey bee on a redbud bloom in East Tennessee.
Do bees forage redbud anywhere? Thank God, TP flow is three weeks away.

    Re: Beekeeping in 20 years?

In a green socialized policed state, beekeeping will be a subsidized crop on a kibbutz-like community. Bee genetics will finally beat the mites.
