Re: How far to take the bees after a split?

Thanks everyone for your replies. Since we own the property 1.2 miles away, I feel it would be best to take the split to that location, introduce a new queen, and build the colony up. I will either...

How far to take the bees after a split?

I'm wanting to try my very first split. We own property approximately 1.2 miles away according to how the crow flies. Is this far enough to take the split? And once I move the bees, how long...
  3. Re: What's this green lookin' stuff on the comb?

Thanks everyone for your replies. I will melt it down and reuse the wax. Did this mold occur after the hive died? Surely the comb wasn't molding like this with the bees, right?
  4. What's this green lookin' stuff on the comb?

I had a completely healthy hive die out this winter because I wasn't a responsible beekeeper and let the colony starve. This was a huge mistake that wont happen again. It died out towards the...
  5. Re: Feeding 3 year old stored honey comb to bees?

Oldtimer, I already placed the shallow honey frames into the super before reading your most recent post. Since we're in a nectar flow, I'm not anticipating that they will do much with it. The...
  6. Re: Feeding 3 year old stored honey comb to bees?

Great, thanks! The frames look to be good. You can see that there is some crystallization. Most of the frames are capped honey. I will throw it into the hive and see what they do with it.
  7. Feeding 3 year old stored honey comb to bees?

I have a few super frames full of honey that I pulled off a hive a three years ago and placed them in a storage tote. Can I take those frames and put them out for the bees as long as they are at...

Re: How mutch honey is in a Med Super?

Excellent information, odfrank. I didn't know that over supering would have that effect.
  9. Re: Place hives at random or make a bee yard?

Yes, we are located amongst the ponderosa pine, pinyon, and juniper with wildflowers. Even though we are dropping into the 40's at night, our daytime temps are in the upper 70's. We are now into...
  10. Re: Place hives at random or make a bee yard?

My question was more geared towards how many hives might be considered too many for one bee yard before diseases or hive robbing become an issue. But it sounds like proper hive management would...
  11. Re: Place hives at random or make a bee yard?

New Mexico Game and Fish has provided a solar powered bear fence at no charge. We haven't used it, though. Perhaps we should consider putting the hives in a bee yard, huh? We are currently using 8...
  12. Place hives at random or make a bee yard?

I'm a fairly new beekeeper who started out with three hives this year. I built 3 hive stands, each stand holds two hives. We are trying to decide if we should place the hive stands at random...

    Re: Bop Vs Rr

As of today, I noticed that the bees have started to build in the super on two of the three hives that contain the bee-o-pacs. It appears that they are building comb in one sectional box before they...

    Re: Bop Vs Rr

I've enjoyed reading every page of this thread. There has been a lot of good conversations. Even though this thread is old, I believe it should be resurrected. I have two bee-o-pac frames in each...
