    Re: Feeding Sub Response

I Have found that patties are very beneficial for my nucs in the spring, even with natural pollen available. I believe they can utilize them at night and days when there's no/little flying weather...

Re: Randy Oliver from Scientific Beekeeping

I agree. I contribute to his trials - everyone who reads his stuff should too... might make a difference in your beekeeping.

    Re: Super DFM - Honeybees

David where do you get your enzymes? I looked around but didn't find any small suppliers.

  8. Re: Still learning - question about bottom board

My experience is that it take at least 3 treatments with OAV for satisfactory mite kill. Particularly if there is brood in the hive.
  9. Re: Marin Bee Survey: Hobby keepers - a net population sink

No, not saying that, but I believe they have pretty serious winter losses. I do know some are overwintering TF hives. I've done it too with my nucs, but had over 50% losses. I have tried several ways...
  10. Re: Marin Bee Survey: Hobby keepers - a net population sink

some of the most "successful" TF beeks I know buy lots of packages each spring. Just saying.

    Re: Winter patties

I've had poor results with candy boards, maybe because I made them wrong. I do like fondant and am experimenting with Lauri's sugar blocks on 1/2 my nucs this winter. So far I like the sugar blocks...

    Re: Super DFM - Honeybees

this is just a slick ad... nothing about controlled studies. How about a controlled study of actual hives done by an independent scientist. I added some probiotics to some of my sugar blocks this...

    Re: Super DFM - Honeybees

no real studies on it... this is the only "study" I could find. It doesn't really tell you much. They need to do a controlled study, until then I say snake oil.

    Re: Drone culling - Varroa

Yes you could but is really messy and you have to pull lots of frames. I put a foundationless frame on the outside of the brood box. Bees will make mostly drone comb in it. I pull it out regularly...

    Re: Winter patties

I don't add anything to my sugar blocks. I feel that the solids will cause dysentery. But my bees often have 2-3 months without cleansing flights. Certainly was true last winter.

    Re: Breeder expectations

I buy all my queens. I do look for VSH or other mite fighting tendencies [grooming etc.] in their breeding. I have almost always found that my losses with these queens were due to PPBK. I have never...
  22. Re: Oxalic Acid Vaporizer Results - Users post here!

One of the local bee inspectors uses OAV. It's impossible to know if you use it unless you are caught in the act. Same with dribble. Adee had it on shop towels. Inviting problems with inspections....

    Re: Hive orientation?

I make sure my overwintered nucs are in a sheltered place with a southern facing. They seem to winter better that way. I don't worry about the production hives. Doesn't seem to make much difference....
  24. Re: what temp can I slip a new sugar block to them.

You want the sugar on the top bars where the bees can cluster under it. On top of the inner cover forces them to break cluster to reach it.

    Re: Mystery Collapse

Nice post. I would suspect that the mites vectored a virus the bees couldn't handle. Maybe nosema also. But failure to monitor the mites leaves you without real information. Also I would have sent...
