Re: Going to give grafting a go tomorrow...

I found that a very fine artist paintbrush to be my favorite. Also hated the chinese tool. Maybe didn't get a good one out of the 6 I bought.

Re: Hives in the shade or full sun

    My take so far-

Shaded hives get more shb issues. Is that temperature related or is it because there tends to be loose moist soil in the shady areas for the shb larvae to live? Would a pad of...

Re: Hives in the shade or full sun

So that brings me to another question.

What triggers a bee to start foraging for the day? And what triggers the end of the work day? Sunlight? Outside temperature?

    Am I correct in thinking...

Re: Hives in the shade or full sun

Could be the reason I don't see much shb is that they are in the sun?

Re: Hives in the shade or full sun

    Very little shb pressure here.

Why do you want them in the open? Easy access? I have a woods road running 700' along my boundary. Still easy access.

Seems to me that "native" bees live in...

Hives in the shade or full sun

So for the last few years, I've had my hives on a border with a neighbor. He's a beek too so that is not an issue. The reason they are there is that's the only spot on my land that gets morning sun....

    Re: OA Vaporization during summer

There are some nuggets of information that need to be pulled out of the earlier post and emphasized.

My background is in HAZMAT and I have had many respirator training sessions.

    As more and...
  9. Re: alternative covering for telescoping outer cover.

Just found a scrap of coil stock in the shop, it measures .018. 18 thousandths, more than twice the thickness of the press plates. And much stiffer to bend.

  10. Re: alternative covering for telescoping outer cover.

Newspaper aluminum is .008. 8 thousandths of an inch. Cannot lay hands on a piece of regular coil stock without going outside to the work truck, -14 F, not happening just now. suffice it to say that...
  11. Re: alternative covering for telescoping outer cover.

I contacted the local newspaper printer and found that I could buy used aluminum printing sheets for scrap cost, just pennies each. Assuming that your local paper has not gone to a smaller "magazine"...

    Re: MY HIVE FELL OVER

Had one of my 5 framers, 4 med 5-frame boxes stacked, fall over in the same wind storm Saturday night. Neighbor walked down to the house to tell me. I went up the hill to check, all looked lost. Went...

Re: My recipe/method for sugar blocks

Lots of chat about how to form and dry Lauri's sugar bricks. Pans, dehydrators, oven settings. I mixed mine in a bucket with a paint stirrer on a drill, then scooped it into brown paper lunch sacks....

    Re: Management Strategy Impasse

So is it safe to say that if you didn't have the "late summer/fall dwindle" that your current business plan would be a success?

    Re: Witness to Regicide

I had the same thing happen this summer. But now wondering if the destruction of the queen cells sent out some form of pheremone that signaled an attack on the hive. Also when you split the boxes...

Re: The 150 rule (heat plus humidity)

+1 on the cool vest! I worked for years in the hazmat industry, you know, the guys in the white tyvek suits cleaning up spills. We had the cool vests and they make a huge difference, but you can make...
  18. Cell starter packed with bees or walk away splits raising queens

So I have been following all the "grafting trouble" threads of late and have a question.

I fully agree that to get a good "take" with grafts/cut cells the most important thing is for the cell...

I dont think the acid will mix with an oil. Most acids are degreasers. Maybe chemguy can help with the quest?

Re: Another Propane Fogger Oxalic Acid Idea

Re: Another Propane Fogger Oxalic Acid Idea

Exactly what I was thinking! Recent reading here on Beesource has led me to think that as the dribble evaporates, it leaves behind the active crystals.
