  1. Re: Anyone know what this flower is .......Texas unmowed area? Bees are working it.

My vote was for digitalis, too. But does it have "spotty" pattern inside the blooms? Most digitalis (foxglove) does.

Re: re-thinking where I placed my hives

I go with morning sun and afternoon shade. People say full sun helps to control hive beetles, but I've had no problems in that regard.

Re: Welcome party or death sentence?

One of my queens was balled once, and it's an unmistakable sort of frenzy. In my opinion, there won't be any question in your mind when you see it.

Re: Green anoles - a.k.a. common lizard....

I have two salamanders living under the cover of one of my TBHs. They are always there.

Yesterday, I found two scorpions, one spider and a stink bug-type creature under another cover.

    I do...
  5. Re: When do they calm down after package install?

Sit a while and just enjoy watching them. They're just trying to acclimate.

    Re: What defines mean bees?

I opened a normally calm hive the other day and they boiled out and started hurling themselves at me. The activity and noise were so intimidating that I closed up the hive, walked away, and tried to...

    Re: Anyone still shipping packages?

    Dear Frank:
I know what you mean. I just had a queen shipped to me, and you would have thought I was awaiting the shipment of an organ for transplant. I got the tracking number, checked on her a...
  8. Re: When do they calm down after package install?

I always felt quite safe after installs. They have nothing to defend yet. I think they're flying around to get their bearings and figure out just where this new home is and what everything looks...

Re: Advice on if my queen is still present.

Sounds like great advice. My hives pretty much ignore me when they're queenright.

Re: 5 out of 10 DISAPPEARED?!?

I'm interested, too, in the numbers in the other hives. I had this happen with a new hive last year. Its numbers went down by about 75%, but another hive's numbers were suddenly booming. I think...

    Re: Buying queens!!

    B Weaver and Honeybee Genetics

I may try an Italian from R Weaver. I may have a hive that's turning too hot for comfort.

    Re: Nuc with Texas bee's

Sounds like you'd feel a little better with some more definite info. I'd like to know if they're B Weaver or R Weaver bees. Just curious, and I could give you more info about their bees.

Re: Bees in cage with queen?

    Dear Kilted:
The package you installed could all hang from one bar? Are you sure the entire package still occupies the hive?

Maybe I am misunderstanding your description.

    Re: Need queens!

www.BeeWeaver.com is shipping queens May 27.

www.RWeaver.com apparently has queens, but I do not know when they are shipping.

These are both in east Texas.

Were you ever tested for bee venom allergy? I went to an allergist, got tested, tested negative but was given an epi-pen just to be safe.

I've never been stung through my Golden Bee suit; in fact, it was tested on AHB, from what I understand.

I'll keep that in mind in the future. This was a new package that had gone queenless, so I moved things along a bit.

    Thanks!

Re: Bees in cage with queen?

I waited two days. Before putting the cage in, I dropped some water on the candy plug since the bees endured two days' shipping.

I can't tell you how glad I am that you posted this. It said not to use it if you're taking certain medications. I will be SURE to mention them to my doctor before I try this.
