Re: Dadant 20 Frame Extractor- SHAKING/WOBBLING

Jason and Harry, I had the same problem with a Maxant, well I hadn't run it. Noticed the reel was closer to the tank wall at one point and the center rod didn't line up with the drive shaft. Turns...

    Re: Fence Law Question

Don't worry about wet leaves, isn't California in a drought? What could possibly go wrong?
  4. Re: Typical compensation for extracting someone elses honey?

Half would be great, but a fallback offer might be 1/3 the extracted honey plus the cappings and honey cut off.
I had some sorgum processed to molasses and the guy wanted 1/3.
    Just saw COLOBEE' s...
  5. Re: Robbing, screening, European foulbrood--1.5 months into beekeeping. Help!

Lynn, I have no experience with the conditions plaguing you, but maybe I can be of some help. First, unless you inspect you can't know what is going on. Do you use smoke to calm? Perhaps inspecting...

If they suddenly show signs of Nosema, could just be laxative effect. Lol

    Re: Plant ID please?

There are three native basswoods, Tilia americana and Tilia heterophylla and T. caroliniana. Possibly different bloom times. Government site lists variation in temperature and latitude as...

    Re: Getting stung from something.

Probably yellow jackets, but as for a single bad actor, when I would go out on the porch, 25' from the hives, a bee would immediately come and harass me. I would go back in house and the bee would...

    Re: Question on combs

Me again. If plastic foundation is all they have, they should pull it equally fast. Is the plastic coated with wax? In reading past discussions, results are all over the board, with some having good...

Re: Bee Inspector coming next week

Look at it as an opportunity to learn, nothing to fear, but don't crawl on the bottom boards while he is there, lol.
  13. Re: how to shrink a newspaper combine down to 2 again?

You could split as suggested above, dividing the resources, but you don't know if out have a laying worker, and there may be more than one. By this time you either have a queen or LWs. I think you...

No Barry, I mean one to help decipher what posters sometime use, like: JTTBH (just trying to be humorous).

    Re: what IS shb????

Thanks Tenbears, et al, I dread having to deal with SHB.
As for acronyms, I think Barry should create a sticky with definitions. JMHO, FWIW.

Re: All natural weed killer (say no to Round-Up)

If anyone has ever piled fresh wood chips or sawdust on the ground to rot, you know that it will leave a bare spot for a couple of years, due to nitrogen depletion.

    Re: solar wax melter

John, does your melter reach temps above 140F.?
Old brood comb consists mainly of propolis and cocoons, very little wax; and what there is, is locked up in the structure.
    Glad I proofread,...

Re: All natural weed killer (say no to Round-Up)

A while back I conferred with Chemguy about concentrating vinegar and he suggested an old method originally used to increase the alcohol content of homebrew. Put vinegar in the freezer and when ice...

    Re: what IS shb????

What accounts for the distribution of SHB? I have heard they had been found in a border county and are in bordering states, but apparently not a problem here, thank Goodness.

  21. Re: 1 Frame of bees and a Queen = hopelessly lost?

Sorry for your situation. I don't have answers, but questions. What about larvae or capped brood? What did you treat with?
The frame with nurse bees should be just fine.
  22. Re: Please, could you help me "read" my one month old hive for the first time?

To expound on JWC' s recommendation, when you take out the first frame and set it somewhere (it can also be set on end and leaned against hive), you then have room in the box to inspect the frames...

Re: Overwhelmed by the strength of my flow

Mike, you know even if the frames aren't capped you can give them a shake to see if it is nectar or honey. If nectar, you could try feeding back, but it may spoil quickly.

Re: Question about bee space and burr comb

Walter, I did the same thing a few years ago, but didn't notice till I had the box completely removed. I saw the space in the lower box and wondered, "Where'd that frame go?", just as it fell off and...
  25. Re: How to get the bees to use my water source instead of my neighbor's bird bath?

If we are offering suggestions on waterer designs, here's mine: I cut a 3/4" piece of Styrofoam that would loosely fit in 5 gallon bucket, then I cut 3 long parallel slots with sides that sloped down...
