    Raising vs. Buying a queen?

There are those in our bee club that teach buying a queen is better than having a hive raise one. The reasoning is that the success rate for a naturally raised queen making it back from her mating...

Re: FDA ruling it the works?

I very rarely dream stuff up on my own. So from Reuters...

Re: FDA ruling it the works?

It is guidance only... not mandatory. Put what you want on the lable. No change.
  5. Re: Will the half left without a queen make it this early?

David, I really find my experience much more enjoyable using the "ignore list" when reading threads like this - not worth the time responding.

    Re: nuc sales profit margin

Bee club price for this area is 100 for a medium and 125 for a deep. Bring your own box, and no exchange for the frames. The nuc has roughly 10K bees (FULL) - 2 frames of brood, 2 frames of honey,...

    Re: slatboards

That would work. I just like not having a bunch of special equipment. I try and find multiple uses for the standard parts.

    Re: slatboards

Another piece of equipment to buy. I just place a box (super, deep, whatever) with empty frames on the bottom board and then the hive on top of that. If they draw on it, bonus. It saves having...

Re: Moving brood from one hive to another

Are you sure it is the same queen? It could be a new virgin.
  11. Re: How do I determine what kind of bee I have?

    Aren't all bees mutts?
  12. Re: Is this colony too weak or is this typical for late winter

I think if you are asking the question of being too weak, then they probably are. Make sure they a re queen-rite and start feeding. If they are not bringin in pollen then give them some substitute....
  13. Re: How do I determine what kind of bee I have?

Here are a couple of pics. One from each hive.
  14. How do I determine what kind of bee I have?

I have bees that were given to me last August. The two hives are doing great. Both are dark bees but not black. Is there a way to know what linage I have for sure? I would add that both are from...
  15. Re: Give Honey to Charity, Food Pantry, PBS Auction?

Most organizations that accept food only accept donations from the public that are non-perishable and not expired. I don't think home canned or bottled goods would make it. You could call and ask.
  16. Re: How many foundress mites can a cell support?

Very good article. It is interesting how climate (relative humidity) can affect reproduction rates of mites.

    Re: Sustainable beekeeping

Glock, I find humor helps. For instance, don't ever start a story at a party about getting a wisdom tooth pulled. The four wisdom tooth crowd will cut you off at the pass about how getting their...

    Re: Nuc Prices

People want a class and detailed answers to "What do I do?" while picking up their first Nuc.

I agree. Sorry for your loss.
  25. Re: 1st Allergic reaction ...it was no fun...

I would not risk it. The body is a funny thing, next time you could not have a reaction, or in 20 minutes you could be dead.
