    Re: 8-19-2014 Swarm

You could just give them nothing and let them draw comb for you. They may not draw much, but you have nothing in them so not much of a loss.

    Re: Honey weight???

trapezoid area is easy to figure. At the top and the bottom together length together (the sides parallel to each other), divide by 2, multiply by the height. Just slightly harder to calculate than a...
  3. Re: Gotta vent about customers' expectations of charges

You should do one a year, free or otherwise. That way you remember how hard they are. :D
  4. Re: Queen Marking Fail -or- Can you spot the Queen?

The inspector in VA uses white on all of his queens and clips the corner of the wing. Left on odd years and right on even. They may clean the paint off of her, but she isn't going to grow a new wing...
  5. Re: Queen Marking Fail -or- Can you spot the Queen?

I know that some folks use Testor's model paint. There is a wide selection of colors. The only issue is that after the first use you end up getting paint on the rim and it works like locktight on the...

    Re: Honey extractor?

Ed, you could do crush in strain through a sausage press very quickly. You limitation would probably be the size, I think the big ones are 2 gallons. I've seen it done with a fruit press but it looks...

I wouldn't look that good in them!
  8. Re: QUESTION for folks with Home Use Intended ONLY, TOP BAR HIVES only, please

When we were kids we would dust the dogs (and everything else) with Sevin. It will probably be the death of me!
  9. Re: Queen Marking Fail -or- Can you spot the Queen?

Looks like one of those Earl Scheib paint jobs!

    Re: Top bar hive traps

I have about 25 of them most are about 16 inches, but a few are as small as 12 inches (8 bars) and others are up to 30 inches. But the only swarms that have landed in my boxes have been in my...

    Re: HOT

Funny, I don't notice the sweat on my hands in the nitrile gloves until I take them off.
  13. Re: QUESTION for folks with Home Use Intended ONLY, TOP BAR HIVES only, please

First year it is unlikely that you will get honey. A realistic goal the first year is to get them drawing straight comb and making it through the winter. In the spring on an overwintered TBH you can...

Re: DIY Crush and Strain equipment

I really like the pans that go on top of 5 gallon buckets that Dadant and the others have. Very durable.

I'm thinking about trying to pickup an antique two gallon sausage press. That would work...
  15. Re: Hummingbird checking out one of my hives!

True, but I know that we have hummingbirgs.
  16. Re: Hummingbird checking out one of my hives!

Looks like I'm in a blackhole on the map for them.
  17. Re: Hummingbird checking out one of my hives!

That particular hive had a little bit of hummingbird feeder food in it. I wish I knew who was putting it out, I would see if I could get them to go to undyed and give them some honey!
  18. Re: Hummingbird checking out one of my hives!

I'm not sure what attracted them to the box. They were on the backside of it. They don't eat bees, and there is no way of getting any honey from there.
  19. Hummingbird checking out one of my hives!

Looked out the window and saw a hummingbird checking out a hive of mine. I'm wondering if he followed them home after raiding a neighbors feeder! :)
  20. Re: QUESTION for folks with Home Use Intended ONLY, TOP BAR HIVES only, please

I don't harvest much. I pulled a little over a gallon last weekend. I was given a ripe queen cell so decided to do a split today. I could have pulled off another gallon from the one hive and I think...

    Re: Golden Mean Full?

Funny, I don't remember seeing on the website that the golden mean hives are designed to create swarms. Leaving your hives in 5 frame nucs will create swarms as well. Not sure that you need any...

Re: Doing a cutout this weekend

Rubber bands are fine. You are going to have to put them in the frames up there, or you are going to need a conveyor of people to had the brood to. Going up and down the ladder will kill you,...

Re: Doing a cutout this weekend

If it were me I would mount a ledge to put the box on the wall at entrance height, since you will be doing the cutout on a ladder. Otherwise you will be going up and down the ladder a bunch. And I'm...
