    Re: stop swarm

I've never actually seen a dragon fly get one of my bees. I've seen birds get them and I've seen Robber flies get them. But I've got TONS of dragon flies. We've also got AHB here, I've had to...

Re: Check Mite + for SHB control

I have tried them, better than nothing but not great and the bees spend a lot of time chewing on them. I've found big chunks out in front of the hive. Some SHB and some bee parts.
    I think they...

Re: Check Mite + for SHB control

I've used it like that, but didn't find it all that effective. Of course I wouldn't do that with honey supers on. I think beetle blasters are about as good, but the only really effective measure...

    Re: stop swarm

My mating nucs are standard 5 frame, thou I usually only put in 4 frames, 2 brood, 1 honey, 1 either empty comb for her to lay in or partially drawn comb for them to work.
    I still think it's dragon...

    Re: stop swarm

Sorry JW, I can't enjoy that process, it's killing me. I end up with over 50% of my hives that swarmed becoming queenless because they don't return from their mating flights.
    So you try to raise...

    Re: Bee Invasion

You didn't say how close the open feeder was to the hives. Mine is 75 yards from the hives, doesn't cause any fighting, or robbing. I've had them take as much as 3 gallons in a day. Thou I...

    Re: Another post about mites...

From a Scientific Paper I just read on Varroa mites:
"Consequently, female mites living when brood is present in the colony have an average life expectancy of 27 days, yet in the absence of brood,...

Re: Oav, time and hive size?

I have not seen any problems with hive size and OAV. That said, I think you need two treatment cycles a year. First following the removal of the honey supers and the hives are booming, going into...

Re: Honey for $1500 a pound

Yea, I get asked "What do you do with all that FREE honey" all the time....

I know something that's even worse. Quail hunting... Talk about an expensive dinner!:D
  13. Re: Warning: Some of these images may be disturbing to younger, more sensitive viewer

I have done as many as 5 treatments before, but found the drop counts fell so hard that I didn't really think it was worth the effort, especially in the summer. Fall treatments are comfortable so...
  14. Re: Warning: Some of these images may be disturbing to younger, more sensitive viewer

yea, I had them in every hive, very rarely was there drone comb in it, so i gave up and got rid of them.
  15. Re: Warning: Some of these images may be disturbing to younger, more sensitive viewer

+1 on the request for more info. I've had very good results with 3 treatments with a 7 day interval. My 2 day drop counts (following treatments) falls dramatically from thousands to less than 100

    Re: Oxalic acid

I don't believe that for a second. Fall is the BEST time to treat as your brood count really drops, which exposes most of your mites to the treatment. And because the amount of brood stays low, the...

I'm glad most people on this forum feel that way. I'm always shocked when I hear the "They are just insects" excuse for killing them. I admit I go overboard to try to save all the...

Re: Bees not eating Sugar Water

You should inspect them, This time of year, I can't imagine them not taking the syrup. Mine are light so I started feeding a week ago, they take all I put out, every day.

    Re: OAV a virgin queen?

Yep, I like that math better, but you still don't get all the mites. That's what I was alluding to. I've done as many as 5 treatments and still killed mites, and a single treatment when there is no...

    Re: OAV a virgin queen?

I don't think you are missing anything. If you can vary what day you treat on, 5 days should cover it. I use 7 days, because I treat on Saturday unless the weather is bad, then I treat that...

    Re: OAV a virgin queen?

I have not treated a hive with a virgin queen. I don't think waiting 10 days to treat that hive will make a bit of difference, I personally would not treat or do anything to a hive with a virgin in...
