Re: Help! What's going on? Any ideas??

if they are still like that tomorrow you could scoop them up and put into a small box and check for a queen. then check the main hive for a queen to see if it is a run-away or what.
  2. Re: These babies hot or getting ready to leave?

+1 why would you take "honey" away if you've been sending in syrup by the boatload? Leave what they have for winter and next year you'll be all set to get a good amount of honey with the hive...

Re: How many 8-frame mediums for winter?

just to show the extreme.. mine are in RI and made it through winter with 2 boxes and a bit of mtn camp sugar on top. Carni mutts, protected south facing, sides and top insulated with 1/2" foam. ...
  4. Re: How would you harvest honey if you were me?

doing 2 supers that probably have foundation would not be fun crush/strain. 20 frames would take a long time and effort. being able to re-use comb is pretty useful. and that is coming from...
  5. Re: How would you harvest honey if you were me?

that many frames seems worth it to get a small to medium sized extractor. This year I did 4 medium frames of foundationless with crush/strain and it was fine but would not want to do much more at...
  6. Re: Question re alternative entrance position for M. Palmer-style double nuc boxes

Maybe do a bottom entrance on one and make a top entrance inner cover type thing for the other (and one with no opening for the opposite side)
  7. Re: Bottom box kinda sparce, reverse in the summer?

Glad to see another with this scenario.. that's what mine looks like too.

Re: Is this a hornet's nest?

We have snow... and Yankees fans... :pinch:

OP could always go Apocolypse Now on them.. tape the entrance shut, cut it down, douse it in lighter fluid and POOOF

    Re: Neighbors destroying colonies

Well, i'm glad that was a lot less damaging than the title suggested. I doubt more than a few dozen bees were harmed in his stupid stunt.. Throw as much of the book at them as you can for the...

Re: how to mark a queen???

Why not take her, 2 frames of brood, frame of honey and throw them in a nuc and let them think they swarmed. then you won't kill her trying to mark without any practice and you get 2 hives

Re: Broken comb in a TBH

Janne, that is why the ones i made i put the wire at the bottom so the bars don't have a gap.

you can see how they are used in PatBeek's video (where i got the wire idea) ...

Re: Broken comb in a TBH

Make a few of these to have on hand. can actually hang the hardware cloth from the bottom of the bar instead of wrapping it around so you don't have a spacing issue. I think this is a faster and...

Re: new split orienting but not foraging?

Went in today to the main hive and took out all but 2-3 cells so they won't do anything crazy.

then finally broke my stingless streak by being lazy and picking up my tools after i had taken my...

Re: new split orienting but not foraging?

Yea, i'd rather them not do that. I don't have the room for more hives so i'll go in tomorrow and nuke all but the best looking ones.

tried to get a pic of one of the nice cells today but they...

Re: new split orienting but not foraging?

Yea, Most of the frames had a nice cap of honey on the top and some edges. I added a frame of open and capped nectar/honey from the other hive and a 2nd box like a feeder but with the option of...

Yea, I did see some getting after it yesterday afternoon. I just finished painting a 2nd level for them so I can throw a comb of (likely) syrup from the big hive in there later today. Also...

new split orienting but not foraging?

Split off a 5 frame nuc a week or so ago. They have had a few small orientations and one good size one today but there is not much traffic at all.

Maybe they are still a bit light and are busy...

mine has a combo of both. i'm guessing that's by what is available. i had to carve some off a bar end today to get a frame to fit in a not quite square box :P

Re: Best time of day for split
