I assembled 130 deep frames last weekend and I need to install a nail below the top bar on each side. What size nail do you guys use for this? I used an air stapler for the other fasteners, but I don't think I can get the stapler in position to use it.
if you glued and used 1.25 inch staples, no need for additional brad
I used 1 1/2" staples and Titebond III. Our Beekeeping Class instructor still recommended the nail under the top bar on each side.
I use 1/4 x 3/4 crown staples, no glue and no staples down throgh the top bar
well as the saying goes,, if you ask 10 beekeepers the same question, you will get 11 answers,.,,
matter of preference,, but I have not had any frames come apart with the glue and a good crown staple,, but if you wish, the nails that came with my frames are about 1 inch long and about 18 gage,,
Are you talking about the cleat board underneath the bottom side of the top bar if so those are only half-inch or 3/8 brads.
Same size crown staple I use for the rest of the frame.
I use a 1/4 crown 1 1/4 long for the top bars and bottom bars. I use a 1 1/4 brad for the side of the end bars. The staples in the end bar with the length I was using was causing too many runout problems for me.
I use Titebond III so it's probably an overkill ... but I use either a 1" X 18 or 1 1/4" X 17 wire nail below the top bar on each side. Either size works fine.
Thanks for the tips! I picked up some 3/4" brad nails for my brad gun and some 1" wire nails. I will give both a try and see how they work.
