Plastic storage tub TBH

Well...here I go...

It's either thow out all the junk I have out in the sheds or do something with them.

So, I decided to put together a TBH with an old plastic storage tub I have lying around.

I am going to cut a slot at one end at the bottom for the hive entrance and make end caps at each end of the frams to keep the bees below the top level. I will also fit wood along the supporting sides that hold up the frames to keep the bees in.

Am thinking of cutting out along the bottom of each side...end to end...and attaching 1/8 inch screen.

It should hold 18 or 19 frames.
The top closes nicely with a complete seal around the top.

I can see how this would work in Florida where the temps are not too low. Go to Walmart and by a hive for $6 :) Do you think the tub can withstand the weight of the honey without the sides collapsing? It may do fine, I just don't know.

I put 150 lbs on the boards and it held.

I'll make sure it has the vertical load spread out along the sides and keep the integrety of the box structure.

If you have already tested with 150 lbs the sides probably won't spread. If they did it sure would be a mess though. I'll look forward to seeing how this progresses. It's the first storage bin hive I've seen:thumbsup:

It's going to be a journey for sure. Just in case, I'd have a wooden box as a backup if anything should go astray.
