Re: nothing in bottom box
Up here (NJ) I'm told some empty comb is good going into winter so the bees have a place to cluster. Not sure about your climate whether the bees cluster or not.
Re: nothing in bottom box
it is quite normal for them to condense the cluster to one box, the upper one,, if you are running two brood boxes,, helps them keep the cluster warm and smaller,
I always take the lower box off,, and put it onthe top in the spring
Re: nothing in bottom box
so taking the lower box off is ok then
Re: nothing in bottom box
As long as they have some empty cells to cluster.
Re: nothing in bottom box
I'm up in Ct. and have 1 frame with only foundation in my top deep box. They never drew out the one I put in place of the feeder. Does anyone know if I should move that into the cluster area so they have more room? Top or bottom?
Re: nothing in bottom box
keep foundation away at this time of year
Re: nothing in bottom box
Should I evenly space the 9? Or just leave the empty feeder in place??
Re: nothing in bottom box
I'm going to check today to see if there's anything going on in the bottom deep? If not, I guess I could remove it and put a frame from that box in??
Re: nothing in bottom box
leave feeder in place unless you think they need the space for food, then place a frame of honey in the place of the feeder. But the space filled with foundation would be fine otherwise. The problem with leaving the feeder in during winter is the condensation will form inside and make for a smelly mess
