Ants and Top Feeder
I started feeding the bees via top feeder, It is the two quart jar, screened style that sits on the inner cover from Walter Kelley. I saw or read somewhere that putting cinnamon around the feeder will keep the ants away from the syrup. I started feeding about a week ago, This isn't working for me. I sprinkled it all around the feeder and the ants walking righ across. Did I not use enough ? Do I need to build a wall with the stuff ?

Re: Ants and Top Feeder
I've tried all the old wives tails cures, nothing worked. You can end up doing what I did: http://www.beesource.com/forums/show...oof+hive+stand
or place your hive stand legs in cans of oil but besides that, don't waist your time.

Your welcome Sam and good overwintering. I hope all your bees make you lots of honey next year.

Re: Ants and Top Feeder
I had that Crazy ant problem and tried MANY things. Best was to feed in a hanging feeder with an ant blocker (Walmart 6 bucks) in the hanging wire AWAY FROM THE HIVE. The setup looks like a Humming Bird feed station. So far I have no ants trying to rob the hive. When I quit feeding still no ant problem. I think feeding on or in the hive just attracts ants.
