Can a swarm survey on syrup and patties this late??
I captured a swarm last evening, the biggest swarm I have ever seen up close and personal in 40 years of being a beekeeper?
I also never collected a swarm this late in the season. We have a ton of golden rod and asters and other wildflowers right now. Our Normal first frost is Oct 15th.
Can a swarm survey this late in the season?

Re: Can a swarm survey on syrup and patties this late??
putting it in on drawn comb would help alot.
Re: Can a swarm survey on syrup and patties this late??
Worst case is that they make a lot of comb for you and die out over the winter. If winter is like last winter, though, they might make it if you feed like crazy.
Very late for a large swarm, for sure.

I agree with drawn comb. I Caught a small swarm last fall. Throught in with drawn comb an another box of honey. No feeding and by next spring it was ready to split.
Re: Can a swarm survey on syrup and patties this late??
What is drawn comb? Please illustrate.
Re: Can a swarm survey on syrup and patties this late??
Drawn comb is pulled comb. In other words the cell walls have been raised
Re: Can a swarm survey on syrup and patties this late??
Sorry, I guess I should've made that clear. What I mean by "drawn comb" is foundation that has comb built on it.
Re: Can a swarm survey on syrup and patties this late??
While we're getting grammar lessons here, how exactly does a swarm survey. Or is this a grammar issue in itself.
Re: Can a swarm survey on syrup and patties this late??
I think he meant "survive"
Re: Can a swarm survey on syrup and patties this late??
Thats what i thought too but he wrote the same way in the title.

dfortune
I'm sure he meant Survive.
That was not that hard to figuer out .
But i geuss ya just had to point that and contribute.

I caught 2 swarms aug. 27 and 28 and both are on there third nuc box {i have the nucs stacked 3 high}filling out the frames. I'm feeding 2/1 suryp and they seem to build alot faster in my nuc towers and swarms build real fast .
Or if you think they can't make it you could combine with a weak hive but i'm sure you know that being a beekeer this long my hats off to you and good luck. My first frost is around first week in OCT.:)
Re: Can a swarm survey on syrup and patties this late??
:rolleyes:Re:
Survey.
Each bee is equiped with two antenna's.
:DI think the general thought about survival was understood.
Re: Can a swarm survey on syrup and patties this late??
Try to add a frame of capped brood after the swarm has settled down in 7-10 days.
Good luck,
Re: Can a swarm survey on syrup and patties this late??
Ben you say 40 yrs of keeping ,this makes me think you have a few established hives
If so?? besides the drawn comb is it possible to rob a frame of capped honey from each
to give them a fighting chance
I'm a southerner so don't have those problems just Guesstimating :)
Re: Can a swarm survey on syrup and patties this late??
40 years of keeping a bee hive I should say. I have had a lot of experience(s) and built up my hive yard to 10 this summer. But sadly I do hot have capped honey to give to the swarm. It has been a up and down year, right now the bees are filling back what they used this summer.
Re: Can a swarm survey on syrup and patties this late??
Oh and BTW for those who use proper grammar and spelling, I am going back to school. And yes I did not mean for the bees to go out and Survey a field or plot. Hey I was tired!!
