Anybody have a reciept for making your own pollen substitute using Flour,Soy,Oat,WheatSugar, Honey & etc? Dale
I have one:
3 parts soybean flour
1 part pollen
2 parts table sugar
1 part water
If you don't have the pollen, substitute brewers yeast.
Mix it up into a stiff dough, make patties. I used it rearing queens last year, and they ate it.

Did you use your own or commercial pollen? Aren't worried of bringing in AFB or something at the most critical period (when the bees are in low numbers and going through a potentially rough buildup period)?

I used my own pollen collected in the fall. Further, if you buy pollen, it is electronically treated to kill the "bugs". Some type of radiation. I guess like a special microwave thing.

Dale, I mixed up the reciept today, also added 1 1/2 parts of Oat Flour and didn't add the water, just left it dry and set it out for the Bees in a 20" dishpan. The bees sure are going after it, kinda fun to watch. I realize that I will have to take it in at night and that they won't have access to if it isn't warm enough for them to fly. Will make some patties and put them in the hive. Supposed to be warm today and tomorrow. Having fun in S.E. Ks. Dale
