Drones

I've heard of people killing thier drones. What do you all think?

I think it's more work than it's worth. The workers will drive them all out when it gets cold and they will die. How would you sort them out?

If you have decent brood comb you won't have that many anyway. The only time I've had very many is when I got a sterile queen once who only layed drone.

For what purpose were they killing them?

My dad had the idea, I only had one hive and he thought it would help conserve honey, we had sat in front of the hive for the fun of it and caught all the drones that went in and out, put them in a jar and then he got his idea. With most hives, with the exception of very weak ones, I dont think it would make all but the slightest difference. Plus drones are fun to play with especially when you let loose a whole jar of them in front of one of your friends.

Unless you're breeding bees, it's not loss. I've heard they are good to practice catching and marking as practice to catching and marking queens. But I haven't tried it.
