I went to look at my hives last week and saw a small swarm gathered on a weed stem. They were about the size of your fist. I had to go out so I put them in a hive body with some foundation. I went back and ck'd on them and they were building some comb and storing honey. I looked and there was no queen, just workers. Why would they leave like that at this time of year?

Are you in a drought? You can combine them later after they settle down.

I have no idea.
I know Tenn. isn't in a drought. Hmmmmm.
1. could have been a superseded queen that left the hive
2. could have been a small swarm that lost the queen (she died, got ate ect.).
3. could have been a small swarm that left a few scouts behind.
that's all I can come up with right now

Have you checked out the condition of your hives? There might be something going on that drove them out.
