Lately I have seen large numbers of bees just flying around the hive in circles and side to side. It's quite a sight that happens around 5:15 and lasts for about 10 minutes. Then the bees will land on something and started "scraping" their abdomen with their back legs. It looks like they are cleaning themselves. Are these newly emerged bees?
I would suppose they are about 16-21 days old doing thier orientation flight before becoming full fledge foragers.
Young bees do that alot a couple of times before they are old veteran foragers.
ROCK ON! I'm glad that I was able to spot the orientation flight and know what it was. It's slipped my mind that the bees hang out in the hive for a little while before their first flight. This is good stuff since I have new foragers and my hive is growing.
