Hi Ted; hope you are doing well & haven't melted down in this heat! Is it too late in the year to do splits? I'm up to 10 hives but have 4 that are 3 deeps high and would like to go into the spring with more hives if I haven't waited too late this year to split them. I'm in south AL (Frisco City).

    Thank you,
    Susan

Ten frame Langstroth with nine frames in the boxes, 3/4 inch western cedar form board plywood, no queen excluders, the bees are on four way pallets with five inch entrances at the corner of the pallets. I would stick with ten frame equipment. Sometimes use two deeps or single and halfs for brood chambers. Use traditional sliding the supers back 3/4 inch for upper entrance during the hot months for ventilation. Use IPM approach to management-rotation of chems from year to year. Good Luck with your beekeeping=TED

Hi Ted, hope you are doing well. I live in south AL (Frisco City), and would like to know how late in the year I can do splits successfully. I am up to five hives now, and would like to get up to at least 8 this year if possible. I made two splits a few weeks ago and they are doing well (just put the second deep on them yesterday). Also, I would like to come up and see your operation sometime if possible (it would probably be on a weekend; the day job gets in the way of my hobbies - lol!).

    Thank you,
    Susan

    Hi, Mr. Kretschmann- er...I mean...Ted...

How's all in Dadeville? I am still in TN. Was to return to AL last week but got behind working my hive and splits here due to weather. Then, Monday as I was about to leave to get the job done, I got a swarm call. Same thing happened Tuesday. Finally, yesterday (Wednesday) I tended to the other items on my "to-do" list. I'm going to crack open the 2 nucs I have at my parents' house see if there are signs of a queen (I made the splits with QC's which have emerged) and then pack for AL. Tomorrow AM I'll likely drop off at my main apiary to throw some more 1:1 feed onto the two new "swarm hives" as I leave town.

Anyway, I am supposed to go to Jemison and pick up a colony there that resides in an old water tank.

Whew, this bee stuff can take up some time this time of year, huh?

I still would like to come down and spend a couple more days, hopefully once extracting is in full swing.

I sure do!! It is the third or fourth year that is the tale of treatment free. Always remember, break glass in case of emergency and grab what ever treatment that it takes to keep your bees alive. DO NOT LET THEM DIE>>>If you do treat like I do, use miticides responsible. We are working constantly this time of year, so it is up to you to tell me when you are coming down. TED

Do you allow visits to your apiary. I'm running about 12 hives right now in North Alabama. I would love to get into side liner status with about 500 hives but that's awhile off. Let me know of a good time to come visit and help or whatever. I am 3 years into this and have not treated my hives and this is the 3rd winter with no losses.

No, as far as I know there where never any other Kretschmanns keeping bees in the state. I was born in 1962. I started keeping bees in 1973. I have always been a bulk honey producer. For the last fifteen years have produced honey for the Souix Honey Cooperative. I would be interested in knowing who the other Kretschmann was. My family name is not very common. TK

Did you or a previous Kretschmann have a couple of stalls at the Farmers' Market on Finley Avenue in Birmingham? Oh, say in the mid to late 1950s

As a wee tike, OK so I was never wee, I would make a bee line to a large honey producerss display everytime my parents went to the Farmers' Market and I stayed glued to the Op Hive until it was time to go.

The fellow running the stall said something about being from south of Montogomery somewhere.
