I was looking at old threads about honey straw machines and saw where you were trying to make straws for other people. Did you find a machine that works? I have been looking for so long I can't even begin to tell you...

Do you have a yummy bar-b-que sauce recipe, that uses honey, that you would be willing to share? I'm going to start selling "pastured pork" at my Farmers' Market and would like to have a bar-b-que sauce to put on my sample pulled pork.
    PS. How's the new job?

Hey Chef.... get a load of this... I bet I can bake a sooflay....(just not as good azyoo..!!!)

    Published Jul 10, 2004

I’ve kept all of my e-mail since 1995, and I don’t have any intention of losing it just because I switch from a Mac to a PC. I needed to export my mail from Mailsmith and import it into Outlook. The process I came up with acutally works to import mbox files into Outlook from any program that can make .mbox files — including Netscape Mail, Apple Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird, Pine, and, well, probably anything that runs on *nix systems.

Now, some folks will want you to give them money to import your mail from an .mbox file into Outlook. My procedure has the positive side effect of being free.

Since I was using Mailsmith, and not something like Netscape Mail or Apple Mail that uses mbox files as its native store, I had to export everything first. Fortunately, BareBones provides a simple Applescript to do just that.

Outlook won’t just go and import mbox files. It does import from Eudora, which uses .mbx files with associated .idx files that keep some sort of an index of something (I am too lazy to look inside). Eudora does import straight .mbox files and will generate .idx files for them. So, the Light or Sponsored version of Eudora is your friend, and our middle step in this process.

Eudora is very liberal in what it considers its mailstore; specifically, it will consider any .mbx file you put in your user folder as its mailstore and display it as a folder. To import all of your mbox files into Eudora, you just need to rename them with a .mbx file extension. You can use the shell to do this.

Once Eudora’s open, you’ll need to open and rename each folder to make sure that Eudora builds an .idx file for it. Sadly (since I have 90-some folders), I couldn’t figure out a way to automate this. Probably would be a quick job with some Visual Basic and COM, if you already knew Eudora’s object model.

Now that Eudora has built an .idx file for each folder, Outlook will be more than happy to import all of your mail. For free!

This worked great for transferring mail from Entourage to Outlook as well.

It should be noted that you need to use Eudora on Windows.

A few other things to note (for Entourage):

You have to save each Entourage folder seperately. You can’t import nested folders. Only the emails on the top level survive and the nested folders just disappear.

It seems to have trouble importing the last (oldest) email in the .mbx file. Most of the time it munges it one way or another.

I did not have to rename the mailboxes in Eudora 5.1 to have Outlook 2000 accept them. I was also unable to locate any .idx files. Perhaps this is only a requirement with older (or newer?) versions of Eudora. The .mbx format seemed to be Eudora’s default mail format, as native Eudora mailboxes also had a .mbx extention.

Thanks for the great information. You just saved us a ton of time!

OK I am learning.... One other quesiton, or maybe 2 :). Do you use 5 frame or 4 frame nucs to overwitner and what is the ratio t fbrood to honey you should have going in to winter? And at what point should this ration be achieved (althoguh I am in VA but with no fall honey flow in my area).. that is right now not enough honey, but I have time to feed and build that up.

Second thought. I took out the division board feeder and put in an undrawn frame which was drawn out in one week (due to back filled sugar water I think) but now I am thinking that I better put this division board feeder back in, as ultimately it needs to spend the witner in there. I am using a queen castle, basically a deep divided in two as the division board feeder is my feeding method (similar to mike palmer's method). This is all such a balancing act!

    John:

    Good questions.

A local beekeeping club...yes there is one. It is called "Pudget Sound Beekeepers Assocation". Type it into google.com and the web page will come up. Pretty good club. I have my own opinion about the club but it is only my opinion. I have been keeping bees for a little while and have had a chance to visit a few beekeeping clubs so do not get too wrapped up in my opinion :).

I would put on any supers until all of the deep frames are drawn out. You can help them to do this by putting the outter frames closer to the center of the brood chamber.

The next, and only strong flow we have here on the flats, is the blackberry flow. This "USUALLY" happens in mid to late June but it all depends on weather. You might get a honey crop depending.

I always tell people that if you want to keep at two hives (for example), go into winter with double that (so four). This will help you cover possible dead outs come next spring.

I would also refrain from using entrance feeders this time of year. This is because of the weather. If it is cooler, they will not work the feed. You should try inverting that mason jar over the inner cover with another box inclosing it.

Hope this helps! Feel free to email me at chefif@comcast.net or call me anytime if you need anything at 360 261 2055.

    Take care!

    Chef Isaac,
I have sen from your posts that you are from Seattle and had a couple of local questions for you. I just started this year and have a 2 hives doing well at my home in West Seattle.

Have you found a local beekeeping club or organization to help you out? I have ben working with a friend who started last year and the folks down at Trees and Bees. I would like to get involved with something more on a local level.

I have 2 deep brood boxes on each hive right now and they each have 70-80% of the frames drawn out and are both producing alot of new bees. I am still feeding 1:1 via a front feeder. In our area when do you see needing to super for any kind of flow? I would assume this to be blackberry next, I am not expecting a surplus this year but would like to be ready if possible.

Fun to read about your adventures with the honey sticks and glad to hear you caught some swarms. I think I need to have an extra hive on hand just in case next year...

    Thanks
