I haven't split yet. Swarms about half go, so you shouldn't lose a colony, queen yeah. I want to plant basswood! Did you buy them in NY? Our area is lots of hay fields, forest, pasture & roadside weeds for the bees to forage. I am TF (treatment free). I like Michael Bush's thoughts on TF. My experience, the 1 ready for winter, made it through with no feeding or treatments. I believe bees from a local source that overwinters in my climate & is TF had a lot to do with it. The bees are acclimated. Since I had a choice, it wasn't ideal to buy bees that were medicated & expect them to survive without it. Without that choice available, I would have got my bees where I could. It is overwhelming sometimes, keep it simple as you want! For me, #1 keep my bees alive #2 get honey. If they swarm, lost some bees, annoying, not the end of the world, no harvest, honey isn't my living. Lose a hive in winter, very sad, but if 1 is left, I can make splits & try again. Hope all goes well for you!

I checked out the nys chat group here in the forum and it seemed dead but you were the most recent post so I thought I would send you a note! Wow seems like you have expanded fast! Have you split any hives yet? I'm kind of nervous about doing that, and catching a swarming hive! Would be a total drag losing the colony to swarming! I've bought a couple 6ft basswood trees to put on the property for some bee food for the future and I bought some wildflower seed to plant in the spring. Now all I need are the bees! How are you with bee medications? I've read conflicting reports that say medications are a must or your bees will not make their first winter and others that say only when you spot problems and still others that say they do not medicate at all!! Yea, like you said there is so much information to process and learn! It almost makes it seem like it's too difficult! Good luck with your apiary!

How has your first year as a beekeeper turned out? I am just starting myself. I have two recently purchased hives. I will be buying two NUCs in the spring of 2017 to really get going!
