Spring splits???

    Howdy friends...

    Question for you all....

I usually make splits right after I harvest. This spring(in February!!), I've got a couple of hives that are already absolutely packed with bees. I'm already checking for swarm cells in these few just to be safe. I have seen some drone cells but no actual drones yet.

If you have done spring splits where you allowed them to make their own queens, when did you do it?

You should be able to do it in the next week and let them raise their own queen. This way you should eliminate some of the small hive beetle problems.

Try to get some older bees in each side. They tend to keep the beetles in check.
