I was reworking somethings on a trap out from a big tree. I needed to raise the box and put some braces in the cover the fact that the box and bees might pull it all down. While hooking the brace cable up, Bang, crash boom, the whole thing fell 20 feet. The worst part is that the hive was in the process of swarming. The bees were coming out of the trap out tube,,they were not just going out for fresh air they were swarming. They had been coming and going from the trap out box. Even after the box feel the bees were all over it. Video attached.

I started a trap-out from a large hackberry tree 25' up on May 19. The hive swarmed on May 17 so there should not have been any eggs or a laying queen on the 19th when I started. I have the new queen in my trap-box as she returned from her mating flights and couldn't get back in. A week ago I went to check on them and stood there at the top of my ladder for almost 20 minutes and didn't see a single bee leaving. It's been just over 4 weeks now with no brood and no queen. Am I safe to remove the cone now and let the bees start robbing it out? If I had started with a queenright hive that hadn't swarmed I would have waited a full 6 weeks but I could use the money from this job to buy some queens and keep the wife off my case about spending more money we don't have on bees.

Hi all. A swarm moved into one of my swarm traps on May 19. I waited until last week to transfer it out of the trap. (trap is an 8 frame deep) It seemed to be pretty full. At the time I was transferring the frames from the trap to the 10 frame deep, I noticed brood of all stages. Did not see the queen but saw eggs, larvae and capped brood. My concern was that the brood pattern was spotty. I wondered, after swarming does it take time to get a solid pattern going or should the queen be laying a solid pattern now? It has been four weeks. Thanks in advance!

I'm doing a trap out on a tree that has a very large colony in it. Their entrance is at the base of the tree where it has split going into the ground. The homeowner wants the colony completely gone but does not want the tree cut down. I have never done a trap out, but I took two other beeks from my club with me to set it up. We sealed the entrance and put a screened cone over it with a hive box in front of the cone entrance. The other beek put two frames of drawn comb with nectar and pollen in them into the box. We added 5 frames of foundation for a total of 7 frames in a 10 frame box. This was set up on Friday. Yesterday when I went to check on it (its an hour drive away), the bees had chewed through the thick layer of GreatStuff foam and made a new entrance and were robbing the nectar from the frames. How do I fix this? If I'm not successful with the trap out, the owner will spray to protect his toddlers who play in the yard. Use something else as a sealer? Add a frame of brood? Please help!

How clean do they need to be to keep the honey sanitary?Should I use bleach or just hose them off or something in between? The traps are ten frame mediums. I think I have one swarm. If that trap had roaches will the bees clean it up theirselves?

My next door neighbor whom I also work with, told me about a swarm that had gotten into his motorhome through the electrical plate. this is my first trap out and it is with new equipment. No drawn combs at all just brand spanking new plasticell. I figure about 3 weeks total for this. Week 1 will be getting the ladies to get used to their new entrance and start drawing comb, week 2 hoping the queen will move in and week 3 closing it up for its new home and removing the old comb out of the motorhome.

Btw; you can smell the honey from 10 ft. away and the surrounding plants are covered with it.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or concerns I would be happy to hear.

I know there are thousands of ways to skin a cat.

Here's my idea for the following trap-out which I will probably begin tomorrow (Mon, 6-17-13)

Please feel free - everyone - to chime-in with your ideas as well, by the way.

I plan on using black trash bags and duct-tape them around the sides underneath the unit.

I then plan on using self-tappers through the top of the wooden base of my trap-cone into the a/c unit. (The a/c unit is no longer functional)

I will then shore-up the area underneath the unit and and beside the trap-cone with more black trash bags/duct tape.

Planning on making a bee vac with one of those Bucket head vacuums from Home Depot (vac head that sits on top a 5 gallon bucket) Has anyone here ever done this? I was thinking on not modifying it in any way other than to put an adjustable damper on it to control the suction. I have seen videos on using a second bucket as the bee collection part and relocating the hose to a different part of the bucket. Is any of this necessary? As long as I am not sucking them up with too much force and damaging/killing them will I be ok? Any thought would be much appreciated!

What is the best time of day to do a cut out? Maybe there isnt, my thoughts were that early in the morning would be good before the foragers leave so you can get as many bees as possible. I also heard that if using a bee vac and your doing the cut out later in the day that the foragers honey stomachs will be emptied by the force of the vac and cause drowning? Im planning on doing my first cut in a week so any thoughts would be much appreciated!
