Good evening all :)

I have just started the make a scale model Apiary and have been doing research online and at the library, but thought it would be beneficial to get on a real beekeepers forum for some back and forth about a couple of questions.

The first big one I have is why the more commonly used European bee houses are not seen much in North America or at least I can't find much evidence of them being used. What are some of the drawbacks? Are they not easier to insulate against the cooler winters in the northern States? I'm equating mid to southern Canada and mid to Northern USA with European temperature cycles, which could very well be half my answer anyway.

The second is about how far the hives are spaced. I'm not finding any answers as to why some might be spaced a few feet apart in an open field vs. tightly packed in rows etc., would love more info on that.

Thanks in advance all, I'm off to see what you all chat about and learn a thing or two (likely more).

Hello, all. I've been lurking on this forum for almost a year now, and I'm so grateful for everything I've learned so far. I installed my first two packages on April 30 into two top bar hives, and it is hard not to take a peek into the window everyday! Fascinating little creatures. :) Anyway, I look forward to being more of a member of this forum now that I officially "have" bees.

Hey all, my name is Matt Cauthorn from Decatur, GA. On my second year with two strong hives (I lost my first one last year). I am now completely addicted to bees. Thrilled to be part of the community.

My day job is at a tech startup, and I dabble in some programming; I plan to post a link to the first of a couple of bee-specific applications here on the forums for you all to see. Hopefully you'll enjoy them.

Some bee / style notes about me:

-- A Bush / Sam Comfort / Lusby natural beekeeping fan, in the midst of regression of my old foundation-based setup.
-- Transitioning to foundationless frames, mostly medium and some deep. Hopefully will regress and run small cells by next year.
-- I take photos of most inspections; if you're new I can't recommend this highly enough. I study my photos for hours after I inspect - as a neophyte it really helps to be able to 'inspect' via the photos as I'm still learning how to be efficient in the hive during an inspection...
-- I plan on doing a couple of splits this year after the flow is over.

Happy to help anyone if I can, and I'm eager to learn from the resources here. Feel free to direct message me, and if you're a fellow Atlanta person I'd love to check out your Hive(s) and you're welcome to come see my setup or inspect with me.

Sincerely,
Matt Cauthorn

This is my first year beekeeping, but our second year trying. Last year my husband did a poor job (well, it's true!) and we lost our hive. This year I am helping and we have two colonies we purchased as nucs six or eight weeks ago. Hoping to learn a lot and figure out how to do this without losing our bees.

Hello new friends and fellow beeks. :w I've always heard that the bee community is one of the most fun and welcoming ones, and I'm sure that'll prove to be true here!

I'm fairly new to the GA beekeeping scene (and new to Geor-juh as well) and am loving every second of it (Formerly from California). Today, actually, I'm installing two package bees so fingers-crossed that all goes well.

I've loved bees since childhood, a cartoon actually inspired and provoked the love of bees to turn into a desire to beekeep, but I was faced with many obstacles living in California when it came to owning my own hives. Now, Georgia's land and people are more welcoming to my hobby, and I'm thrilled to begin on this journey. I look forward to meeting fellow beeks and learning more about 'the girls' from both them, and you.

This is all new to me. It's captivating. I'm in Sonoma with 3 new hives. 2 came from Sacramento and the other from Sebastopol. The Sebastopol hive is doing the best of the three. It's popular to have hives in Sonoma lately, although I find that most people don't care for their own. I'm a little more hands on than that, even though I am pretty scared of doing something wrong!! Anyway, there's a quick intro to me.

I am brand spanking new to the world of beekeeping. The feral hives around my area have started to swarm and I decided to face my fascination, and fear, head on. I asked if any of my friends wanted to set up a bait hive, and sure enough I have one sitting in my yard now. I am excited, a little scared, with what will happen in the next few weeks.

Hello:
I am new to this forum, but not to beekeeping, as I've been practicing for about 10 years in the wet maritime climate of Western Washington. Just a word on my experience with Alaska Bee Products. A number of people in our community ordered from this company and I ordered 2 - 5# packages. Some of the queens were quite fuzzy i.e. very young and they may not have been in mating nucs long enough to assure that they were well mated. That certainly turned out to be true for one of my hives and supersedure cells appeared with a very small brood and then no queen. I have had to wait to obtain a new Carni queen (Italians do very poorly here) and with our short season, I am out a year and $110.

It appears that the queen was not a good one and the owner, Mike Radford, not only would not supply a new queen, he told me it was "my problem."

I certainly will not purchase from Alaska Bee Products again.

Hi, everybody! I'm a member of a community farm here in Pittsburgh, PA and we are just getting started with our own beekeeping project. The idea had been swatted around last year but no one took leadership, so this year I jumped in headfirst to lead a group of newbie beekeepers, with no idea what I was doing! I've been reading a lot. There's still tons to learn though. I've been in contact with our local beekeeping group and we're putting out feelers for neighbors with bees as well, so we'll have someone nearby to support us through this.

When I'm not working with the community farm, I work at a big-box store, play with the cats, and garden on my own tiny lot. We own less than a tenth of an acre and most of it isn't plantable land but I'm expanding my garden beds every year. Eventually I want chickens but I figure a community bee hive is less work to start (and I'll have more help) than a home chicken coop.

So that's me. Interested in bees, love them for their pollination and really hoping for some honey, although I think we may be getting started a little late this year (we don't even have our hive yet!).

Hello

Well, we have been interested in beekeeping for sometime and finally decided to take the plunge. Purchased and installed two nucs last Fri. One nuc was definitely more robust than other.
During install noticed small hive beetle scurrying in the bottom of one the nuc boxs. This prompted some research on my part for treatment. I like the screened bottom with rear slide out oil filled tray. Will this do double duty for some mite control?
