I have never had to use anything against the SHB here in Michigan although I have seen a few now and then the last couple years, but this year with the mild winter and early warm spring I have noticed quite a bit of them already in most hives. All my hives are located in pretty much full sun and are strong colonies, two things they say help against the beetle, but I may resort to some type of trap if I keep seeing so many beetles. I don't want to use any chemicals, so what traps are available and successful that use a natural bait? I read something about using mineral oil or other kinds of oils, but where do I get the traps? FYI i have noticed quite a few SHB larva on my sliding bottom board. I try and keep them clean until it warms up and i dont really need them on there.

will be placing many cd traps this weekend

What do you bait the cd traps with? John

I put some old pollen from the sliding bottom board and some gelled boric acid. This year i'm adding some cider vinegar and brewers yeast to the stuff to see if it works better.
I bet some tiny pieces of melon or cantelope would work also, may have to try that later when its around

fwiw I've had much better luck with the Beetlejails and mineral oil, compared to the cd traps. Be prepared to try a couple of different things until you find something that works for your area/climate.
