I do the same thing with a spring scale on a arm with a movable post and foot. I don't need a special support under the hives.
Out of 100 or so weight checks, I've only dumped one that was very very light. That will get your blood flowing, in shorts, when the hive flys over before I could grab it.

I actually found the veil the guy is using interesting. Never seen anything like it.
