I am curious as to why radials seem so much more popular than horizontals? When I see pictures of people's honey houses radials seem to dominate. Is it just the price of horizontals that deter folks, or are there other factors? Adrian.

Parallel extractors put less stress on the comb. They are a bit more money however.

Radial extractors have been around longer and may be easier for most of us to load and run. Parallel radials are newer and take some experience w/. My limited experience w/ them tells me that your frames need to be more uniform in size and condition or they won't fit the extractor.

I assume you mean tangential? The only horizontal one I know of is the Sweinty one for top bar hives...

Tangential were around longer than the radials. Radials are fairly recent in the large scheme of the history of extractors...

MB, I meant the kind that Cowen make, or another being the maxant Hornet. I think Maxant and Mark called them parallel radials. I believe I wasn't clear enough in my original post. Adrian.

Here is a picture of a horizontal/radial extractor in use in Russia. It has removable racks and takes 36 shallows.
