I originally picked Wyoming for the same reason (the Texas game) but then I saw the point spread. It was one of the most one-sided spreads, and I figured SOMEBODY out there saw both teams play and set/affected the spread. So much for that theory.

Seriously. And here's the real kicker... I don't follow college football. At all. I'm not even sure what I did or how it works, but I'm pretty sure that the day I did it that there was still one game in which the teams had not been determined. Typically I either pick all of the underdogs if they're given, or I pick every home team, or every team on either the right or left side of the form. I believe in this one I picked underdogs?

That's funny! Sometimes keeping it simple and just picking the same strategy all the way down works out to be best. Kinda like how I picked "C" for all test questions. :)

I just went down the list and selected all one side as I recall. The very last game couldn't be picked when I did it and I never went back. I don't remember assigning any kind of weight, I just picked them like "Pick the Pros" cards at the office. I'll be gone by the end of today if we were supposed to assign any kind of preferences.

What are "confidence points" and what are we supposed to do with them?
NeilV
12-26-2009, 07:20 PM
Each game is not worth 1 point. It is worth what you assign as "confidence points." If you pick a game right with 20 confidence points, you get 20 points. If you pick wrong, you lose the opportunity to get 20 points. You can move the games up and down to assign the points. You can only assign a certain level of points to each game (34 to 1, with each of those numbers available for one game only). So long as you keep picking everything right, confidence points don't matter.
Hambone
12-26-2009, 07:52 PM
(34 to 1, with each of those numbers available for one game only). So long as you keep picking everything right, confidence points don't matter.
Right. Neil and I will be tied for the lead (for now) with 57 points after USC wins tonight. We have not won the same amount of games, but out confidence points on our wins add up to be the same.
Barry Digman
12-26-2009, 09:20 PM
Since I don't know anything about college football I'm guessing that trying to assign confidence points would be useless. I'll just let 'em ride. I'm assuming that about midway through the schedule that the random picks will be overtaken by the true handicappers.
Barry you can still assign the remaining confidence points for the teams that haven't played, you can change any of them until 5 minutes before kick off. when you click your selection all you have to do is drag each game to the confidence points you want, confidence points are on right side

Derek,
What in the world is going on at Tech????? Locking players in dark, confined spaces because they have concussions???? If the truth is even close to that, Leach is done. I always knew he was a little eccentric, but that's wild and crazy stuff.
Neil
Hambone
12-29-2009, 08:44 AM
Craig James has always been bitter his son doesn't get more playing time. He was promised his son Adam would have more of it. Which he hasn’t got. Adam James had gone to a doctor and the doctor told him he had "concussion like symptoms". James came to practice with sunglasses on and when asked why he was wearing sunglasses to practice he told the coaches the doctor told him to avoid sunlight. When he wouldn't take off the sunglasses for practice he was sent inside to clean an equipment locker where it was "dark". I've also heard he was "forced" to walk around the practice field while everyone else practiced on another occasion (like the next day).
Unless there is more to it and other players come out. This is a very low class move by the James family. What Leach did though unusual sounds like he was acting in the best interest for the kids health.
NeilV
12-29-2009, 09:15 PM
Derek,
If thats what you want to believe, that's okay with me.
But what I heard is that he put the kid in a dark, old well in his basement naked and kept lowering lotion in a basket, while holding a poodle, and saying, "It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it get the hose again." But if you can't deal with reality, you can stick with your story. We won't make fun of you (at least not to your face) for standing by your man like Tammy Wynette.
Also, I would like to tell everyone that, although Wisconsin is currently winning, I am ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that I actually picked Miami and put a gob of confidence points on Miami. Then I checked the score and I had picked Wisconsin (even though I really DID NOT pick Wisconsin). So if Wisconsin wins, and I pick up about 30 points on it, then there has been a divine intervention and I am destined to win this contest and the rest of you (especially Mr. Digman) don't even need to check your scores.

12-30-2009, 04:29 PM
Derek,
Here's the reality:
1. right or wrong, Leach was not going to be able to recruit in a competitive way after this;
2. in the Big 12, you can't recruit, you're a loser; and
3. in college football, everybody loves a winner, but nobody loves a loser.
So Leach had to go.
Not saying its right, but that's how it is.
Neil

12-30-2009, 04:45 PM
Your probably right. But it also didn’t ever have to happen. If the James family wasn’t such a group of cry babies this would have never made it to the media. If this happened to any other kid on the team we would never be hearing about it. The James family is well known in North TX, and well known for being cry babies. Craig does/did the same thing with his boy at Celina High School. Craig has now ruined two programs. SMU and Tech. The Tech brass has not like Leach for a long time, but he wins and brings in a lot of money. Problem now is trying to find a good coach who is going to want to come and coach a team when they know that the school won’t stand behind them. Not going to be easy. But you never know.
NeilV

If they wave some cash around in front of a good coach from a secondary conference, they'll get somebody. The hard part is figuring out who has been good as opposed to lucky.

That's the problem. Tech doesn't need a secondary coach. Leach has built Tech up and got them on the map. Tech got a commitment a couple of weeks ago from the #1 ranked high school QB. Wonder if he still comes. Tech needs a top tier coach. Would like to see Houston's or Baylor's coach sign on.

A lot of what I heard on the sports talk shows today is that the real issue was the strained relationship between Leach and TT since the contract negotiations last year. The incident with James just proved to be a good way for the school to gain the upper hand and get rid of Leach.
Personally, I would not have fired Leach for this incident, nor would I have fired Mangino if I were Kansas. Football is a tough sport and these kids have to be tougher than crying out about how poorly their coaches treated them. A coach is not suppossed to be your best friend, you are supposed to get mad and hate them at times, but later on you begin to realize that their actions towards you were to teach you a lesson and you're thankful to them because you learned it. If you cry out that you were mistreated you won't learn those lessons. I was afraid that Kansas' actions would open up a can of worms in college football, I just didn't realize it would be so soon. Are these players going to start crying foul to the media because coach made them run sprint ladders after practice?
NeilV
12-31-2009, 10:55 PM
I think this probably had a lot to do with who the kid's daddy was and the way it was going to affect the program's reputation. It also is well known that the administration and Leach did not get along. That part I don't get, because he improved the football program at Tech a bunch. I agree that the whole thing is overblown, but it would be used by every other program recruiting the same players as Tech. Leach will find a good job somewhere. Given the public opinion in Texas, I suspect he will get a decent settlement on his lawsuit too. It's a bit much to fire him right before he is due to get a big bonus.

Just a note.....I was going to Texas A&M in the late 70's when SMU was a football powerhouse. Remember a guy named Eric Dickerson...well I watched him play. he was practically a one man football team and was dubbed the "pony express". Craig James was on that team and his main job was blocking for Eric Dickerson. Every now and then craig would get the ball and usually got stuffed at the line.
Leach didn't mistreat "crybaby" adam. Leach put Tech on the map as far as a football program. I disagree he would not have been able to recruit anymore after the James' went "Whaa Whaa" to the media. I think the admin at Tech are a bunch of first class buffoons for canning Leach. I'm starting to sound like a Tech supporter:doh:

Neil is doing very well. The only game I have in question is the Iowa/GT. Other than that I am pretty sure I have them right.
I would have bet my life that TCU was probably the second best team in the country behind Bama, that just goes to show that the 3-4 weeks layoff before bowl games can mess teams up, or maybe its just my thinking because I aint doing to good picking bowl games.
Hambone
01-05-2010, 09:03 AM
It’s either a long layoff hangover. Or they were overrated. I think had either one of them played Fla, Bama, TX, we would have seen a similar result like the Fla vs Cinci game. I think both of the QB’s and a few other players would have been carried off on a stretcher had they played the teams listed.
The TCU loss hurt Neil alot too.

01-05-2010, 09:35 AM
Ouch. It surely did. I thought that pick was a good one back when I did the initial picks. The more I thought about it, the more I thought it was a toss-up. But I don't feel any better about the rest of the games but one (not saying which one, but you can probably guess).
Looking back, my biggest mistake was the fresno state pick, with that many points on it so early. I've never done this before, and it was only after this started that I figured out some of the strategy. When I did the original picks, I did not even realize that you could change them after the contest started.
I might still win, but I doubt it.
