Hi
Back years ago, when i first started beekeeping in 2001, I had a colony of Midnites that I requeened with an Italian Queen. I know now that the Midnites are gone, but does anybody remember or know of (i know it was proprietary) the combination that was used to create the midnite.

Books and Internet articles that I have read states that it is a double hybrid of both the Caucasian and Carniolan.

I know it may seem pointless to think about using this hybrid these days, but it would be nice to know how to recreate them.

Thanks in advance

The early ones were two lines of Caucasians. Later on they couldn't maintain the two lines of Caucasians and started doing a cross between a line of Caucasians and a line of Carniolans.

This is also my understanding. Some of the Weavers use to produce Midnites. If my memory serves me correct, which it probably does not, I think it was Howard Weaver. You might be able to e-mail the Weavers and ask about this information. I also had Midnites during the late 70s through the mid 80s, and then I quit beekeeping until this year. I always had midnites and of course they were excellent honey producers and very gentle, except sometimes could be rather nasty if allowed to requeen themselves. I always had marked queens and made it a policy of requeening during the fall, and mine were always ready to go during the next spring, early. During a honey flow I would seldom use gloves, and during early spring when populations were low often would go without a veil. Those were truly the good ole days.
