Anyone Polyurethane their hives instead of painting them?

i polyurethaned all my top bar hives and have had no problems with them. just put on 3 coats instead of 1. i went with minwax semigloss.

Thanks for the feedback.. I used Minwax gloss because I had some sitting around.

Minwax is not rated for outdoor use. Ask your paint dealer for their best exterior clear coat. You'll probably have to go to a marina and get stuff for boats.

I've used deck treatment suff, and it works fine. But fades faster than paint.

Historically it was common to use pine gum resin.

What about WinMax Urethane? I use it to protect my cabin exterior walls... Is anyone using it?

Would that eliminate the use of the metal cover?

Dip all mine in Rosin and wax.....2 parts wax, one part gum rosin.....saves me tons of time....

If it's not rated for exterior use, UV light will break it down.
